2011 NBA Playoffs

It's been awhile since I've updated this blog. But the NBA playoffs is just around the corner so it's about time I give my thoughts about it.

The Chicago Bulls has really been the surprise team this season. Behind Derick Rose, they've been playing really well as a team. Note that this team has no legit superstar, as I don't consider Rose to be at that level yet. He's new to the league.

Bulls fans have so much to rejoice. It's back to the Michael Jordan era where the team is able to beat the best teams in the NBA. Fans are out and ticket sales are sky-high. In fact, even nurses from work, rush into the games. They just take of their nursing scrubs and they're off to the arena. The Bulls homecourt has an amazing crowd.

The Miami Heat on the other hand, with Lebron James and Chris Bosh wearing the Heat uniform is still finding consistency. They've beaten strong teams including the LA Lakers but at the same time bowed to the lower-ranked teams particularly to the Cleveland Cavaliers. In James' second game against his former team, his triple-double output wasn't enough to beat the determined Cleveland Cavaliers. Heat's big three is no doubt the strongest offensive crew in the NBA. You can say, they're a one-on-one team with James and Wade on board, but still, they can score. They're problem is on the defensive end. They are not solid defensively. I guess you can attribute that to the lack of defensive guys in their roster.

The Lakers and Celtics have been struggling also. They are not as dominating as last year. The San Antonio Spurs has been solid this year but the question is can they do the same in the playoffs.

In hospitals, scrubs tops must be worn by nurses. In the NBA playoffs, teams must wear not only their uniforms but their best game. Only the best team will survive. I'm very excited in this year's NBA playoffs. My team? Miami Heat!

PBA: BMEG versus Talk n Text

With their acquisition of slam dunking forward Kelly Williams and high octane guard Ryan Reyes, Talk N’ Text has become a certified powerhouse and threat to the throne.

In their Tnt debut last Friday, the two stars helped the Tropang Texters get past the Coca-Cola Tigers while displaying a glimpse of what they could contribute for the team.

“For now we’ve got a pretty balanced line-up,” offered TnT coach Chot Reyes.

It may take a while for Williams and Reyes to fully get acquainted with their new roles so Reyes expects the rest of the team to approach the next couple of games with a great sense of urgency.

The next challenge for the Tropang Texters is B-Meg Derby Ace, a team that has been struggling offensively but has been surviving with their suffocating defense.

Reyes realizes the ability of the Llamados to dominate the game and he is prodding his troops to cOme with their A-game in the 7:30 p.m. showdown Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum he dubbed as a battle of offense vs. defense.

Ryan Gregorio, the Derby Ace coach, is just as cautious.

He acknowledged that their defense will be put to test against the high scoring Texters, who are on a six-game winning streak, and it would be a disaster to challenge the league’s second best team (7-2) to a shootout.

Instead, Gregorio said, they intend to disrupt TnT’s rhythm with their lockdown defense that has been holding opponents to 77 points and keeping them in contention despite the absence of star frontliner Kerby Raymundo.

The B-Meg Derby Ace coach said the addition of Williams and Reyes has transformed TnT into a super power that no PBA team can match in terms of roster strength.

“They are very deep in every position and every team that they play against will be considered virtual underdogs. That is an added motivation for us,” Gregorio said.

Gregorio said their goal is to secure a spot in the top 5 that would secure them an outright quarterfinal berth. But a seventh win in 10 games will enable the Llamados, who are on a three-game winning run, to stay within striking distance of leader San Miguel (9-1) and stay in the hunt for an outright semifnal spot.

Alaska also tries to bolster its playoff chances against skidding Coca-Cola in the other game scheduled at 5 p.m.

“We want to see if we can follow up the positive things we established in our last game,” said Alaska coach Tim Cone referring to their defense, rebounding and execution down the stretch that earned them an 82-73 come-from-behind victory over Rain or Shine last Friday to improve to a 5-4 (win-loss) record.

The Aces escaped with a 104-103 decision against the Tigers in their first meeting on May 7 – a win that Cone didn’t find satisfying, calling it “tsamba.

But as the saying goes, sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

Bo Perasol, the Coca-Cola coach, would gladly take it anytime.

And why not?

After starting the conference with three consecutive victories, the Tigers have lost six of their next seven games, including a five-game losing run. Overall, Coca-Cola has not won in almost a month, or since beating B-Meg Derby Ace, 79-76, last April 14.

“I hope we can find a way to arrest our losing skid. We’re not even thinking about the other remaining games. Just this one,” Perasol said.

LeBron, Cavs eliminate Bulls, face Celtics next

LeBron James just missed a triple-double despite an apparently sore right elbow, and the Cleveland Cavaliers advanced to a playoff date with Boston by beating Chicago 96-94 in Game 5 on Tuesday night in perhaps Vinny Del Negro's final game as Bulls coach.

James, favoring a tender right elbow that appears to hurt worse than he's letting on, scored 19 points — 16 in the second half — and added 10 rebounds and nine assists as the Cavs finally saddled the stubborn Bulls to win the series 4-1. Unable to lift his right arm, James was forced to shoot a free throw left-handed with 7.8 seconds left.

Antawn Jamison scored 25 points for Cleveland, which will face the Celtics, reuniting teams that don't like each other and who played a testy seven-game series in 2008.

Game 1 is Saturday.

"A lot of people are saying they're too old, but we know they're going to come out and give us their best shot," said Jamison, who was not with the Cavs the last time Cleveland met Boston in the postseason. "It's going to be a hard-fought series. It should be fun."

Derrick Rose scored 31 points and Luol Deng 26 for the Bulls, who had several shots roll in and out in the final minutes.

Delonte West had 16 points and Shaquille O'Neal added 14 while racking up fouls against Chicago's big men.

The Cavs were intent on closing out the series at home but they couldn't shake the Bulls, who were trying to send the series back to Chicago for Game 6.

When Jamison buried a 3-pointer with 3:30 left, Cleveland was up 93-84, and for the first time all night Cavaliers fans finally started thinking about a matchup with the Celtics, who eliminated Miami earlier.

The Bulls, though, had other plans.

Deng hit a jumper and two free throws before Rose, who made Cleveland defenders look silly all series, made four straight from the line to pull the Bulls within 93-92 with 1:32 remaining.

Two free throws by James then gave Cleveland a three-point lead with 1:11 left.

Rose then tried a short shot in the lane that went halfway down before spinning out.

Cleveland's Mo Williams, who shot a dismal 2 for 13, then missed a baseline runner but the ball went out of bounds off Chicago's Joakim Noah. The Bulls did get the ball back on a steal, but Rose forced up an awkward left-handed layup over Anderson Varejao that was short.

James grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He made his first attempt to make it 96-92, but with his elbow causing him pain, he tried his second shot left-handed and it was way off the mark.

Down four, the Bulls got a layin by Deng just before the buzzer.

James, who wore a sleeve on his right arm for the second straight game, refused to address his injury before the game.

"I don't know what is up with it, but I'm ready to play," he said.

So were the Bulls, who fought until the end to prolong their season — and for Del Negro.

Chicago, which had to win down the stretch to earn the No. 8 seed, entered the playoffs amid controversy surrounding its coach. Del Negro reportedly got into a physical confrontation with vice president of basketball operations John Paxson last month, an incident the team downplayed but could have long-term effects.

Rose said he would hate to see Del Negro lose his job.

"We both came in as rookies. It would be devastating," Rose said. "But it's not up to me, it's up to the front office. They're the ones that drafted me, so I guess I'm behind them."

Rose said it would be hard to imagine the Bulls firing their coach after making the playoffs.
"It would be unusual, especially since it's our second time (in the playoffs)," Rose said. "But the league changes constantly. I guess that's how it is in the NBA. It's tough to coach up here."

Cleveland's plan in the fourth quarter was to force the ball inside to O'Neal and let the Big Diesel power his way to the basket.

O'Neal drew two fouls in a five-second span on Chicago's Brad Miller, who was doing all he could to keep the 325-pounder out of the lane. Del Negro and the Bulls assistants protested the second foul and Miller had to be grabbed by his teammates before he got called for a technical.

One minute later, O'Neal got Noah to reach in and commit his fourth foul. The Cavs immediately went into O'Neal again, and this time he spun on Noah and dunked on the Bulls' outspoken center, sending the nervous, sellout crowd into a momentary frenzy. — AP

Willie Miller traded for Cyrus Baguio

Just as everybody is taking the much-needed rest after the blockbuster PBA All-Star Festivities in Puerto Princesa over the weekend, Alaska Milk, in a stunning move, traded two-time MVP Willie Miller to Ginebra in exchange for Cyrus Baguio.

The deal was consummated yesterday and both parties claimed their teams will be better by the exchange.

Miller, the 5-foot 11 spitfire who earned the moniker the "Thriller," for his daredevil moves, adds a new dimension to a Ginebra team which, before he came on board, already teemed with star power.

Alaska coach Tim Cone said it was Miller who had sought for the trade, although no reason was given why the player asked to move to another team.

Cone said that he will surely miss Miller, whom he considers as "one of the real good guys in the league."

"He made it known to us for the last couple of years that he has wanted to be traded. It was only now that the Aces got what it felt a good deal," Cone said.

"I think it-s a good deal for us," said Joaqui Trillo, Alaska-s alternate governor to the PBA Board.

Miller is known as a prolific scorer and a fine closer � traits that landed him a spot in the Philippine team that finished 8th in the FIBA-Asia Championship in Tianjin, China.

Baguio, who blossomed into a fine all-around player during his stint with Barako Bull before he was acquired by Ginebra last conference from Air21, was also a member of that team handled by coach Yeng Guiao.

Interestingly, Ginebra and Alaska battle each other at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.

This will be Miller-s fourth team in the PBA after starting his pro career with Red Bull, which took him as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2001 Rookie Draft. He also played for Talk -N Text.

Miller, the PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2002 and 2007, will have as teammates reigning MVP Jayjay Helterbrand, Mark Caguioa, Ronald Tubid, and Celino Cruz.

Ginebra mentor Jong Uichico said that he would rather "wait and see" on how to utilize a talented player like Miller, who will have his first practice session Thursday with the Kings at the Green Meadows gym in Green Hills, San Juan.

So far this conference, the 32-year-old Miller averaged 17 point, three rebounds and 4.5 assists.

It-s interesting to see if the native of Olongapo City will start for Ginebra or will come off the bench behind Caguioa and Helterbrand.

Both Miller and Baguio earn maximum salaries of P350,000 and their contracts will expire at the end of July 2010.

Alaska Aces: On Sonny Thoss

In what could be the biggest headache of opposing teams in the 2010 PBA Fiesta Cup Alaska Aces coach Tim Cone plans to field a twin tower combination of 6-7 Sonny Thoss at power forward and new recruit 6-9 Sam Eman at center.

Rather than alternating Thoss and Eman at the slot coach Tim will play the two big men on the floor at the same time.

Thoss welcomes the idea and is excited to show what he can do at his new position at the wing. He realizes however that it will entail a lot of hard work and sacrifice for the new plan of coach Tim to succeed.

I want to adjust to being able to play the wing and work with Sam on the court, said Thoss. That is pretty much my focus at the moment. We are both eager and excited during practices. We are getting used to playing together at the same time. Hopefully it will work out for us.

The Alaska big man says that he needs to be ready for the unique challenge of playing the forward spot.

Well I guess offensively I will have a huge advantage because of my size, said Thoss. But at the same time I will have to guard smaller, quicker forwards at the other end. So there is going to be a downside for me too.

Thoss says coach Tim explained to him what he needed to do and what were the expectations from him.

I will be working on my footwork and strengthening my legs, said Thoss. I will have to be quick on my feet all the time. We will see how I can guard smaller, faster forwards.

The Aces have been practicing for the past weeks with new additions Eman and import Diamon Simpson. Thoss and Eman have played not only against each other, but also alongside each other many times during scrimmages.

The Aces tested their huge frontline of Eman, Thoss and Simpson against the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos in back-to-back games in Cebu. The Aces lost the first game 87-88. They then overwhelmed the Ninos with their size and strength up front to post a rousing 87-75 victory in their second game.

Sonny and Sam have been playing great together. Sam is picking up things quickly. Sonny adjusting well to the wing position, said coach Tim.

Like the rest of his teammates, Thoss felt that the 0-4 defeat suffered at the hands of the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants (now B-MEG Derby Ace Llamados) during the PBA Philippine Cup Finals only serves as a stinging reminder that will help the Alaska Aces try even harder this conference. The Aces did their best but still fell short of their target the past conference.

Everybody is down losing like that, said Thoss. But we are definitely hungry to go out again and go all the way this coming Fiesta Cup conference. It (defeat in the finals) only served to make us more determined this conference.

The Aces were impressive in Cebu but are getting better everyday as newcomers Eman and Simpson continue to become better acquainted with the Alaska system and their teammates.

Comfortable akong kalaro sa loob si Sonny, said Eman. Pwede talaga kaming magkasabay sa loob. Sa Los Angeles (Lakers) nga mas malalaki pa sa amin si Pau Gasol at si Andrew Bynum. Pero sabay din sila sa loob.

Even with Thoss and Eman playing their best, the Alaska Aces may not be able to beat the Los Angeles Lakers. But with the two playing smoothly together the Aces will most likely be good enough and big enough to beat the rest of the field and win the 2010 PBA Fiesta Cup crown.

Listless Celtics 'disgusted' by loss to Nets

"I got nothing to say. I feel disgusted."

That's how Kevin Garnett reacted after his Boston Celtics (36-21) lost to the New Jersey Nets (6-52) 104-96, a loss that may as well have been by 20.

The Celtics earned a smattering of boos from their home crowd after clocking in with their most lifeless first half of the season, and that's counting a hot start that led to a very early 12-2 lead. As the Nets mounted a 27-14 run to close out the first quarter, the Celtics displayed less energy and willingness to play defense than many teams show every night in the NBA Developmental League.

It was a horror show. It is the low point of Boston's season, and perhaps of the Garnett era. The collapses against the Clevelands and Orlandos of the league are one thing, but scoring 15 points in the second quarter and eventually losing to a team that could turn in the worst record in league history?

"They played better than us. It's not hard to explain," Celtics coach DocRivers said. "We told them yesterday, 'It ain't the system. It's our heads. It's between the ears. And we've got to come out and play. Everyone wants to beat you, you can bank on that.'"

They did mount a comeback, of sorts, though its success would not have removed this game from the category of a moral loss. With some generous shot-clock management from the local staff -- allowing Rasheed Wallace to catch, turn and shoot a 35-footer off an inbounds with one second on the clock -- the Celtics were able to close the deficit, once at 18, to six on two separate occasions in the final 2:09. But four missed threes, good looks all of them, and loose balls going the wrong direction stopped things short.

"I talk about it a lot with our guys, 'Those [plays] are the basketball gods punishing you," Rivers said. "'You have no right to get back in this game.'"

The loss was Boston's 11th of the year at TD Garden, just one less than in the previous two seasons combined.

"Guys are coming in thinking they can win at the Garden, and last year it was totally opposite," Rajon Rondo said.

The Nets' win was no mistake -- they knew they could win. It was a magnificent performance, and one that should not go forgotten in the wake of the doom and gloom that will follow the Celtics around for a couple days.

"I don't [think] it's so much difference between [the Celtics], it's a difference between us," Brook Lopez said. "As we progress through our season we've definitely improved. We finally broke through tonight."

Though the Nets strayed from him on offense in the fourth quarter, Lopez was the bull that brought the game home, playing excellent interior defense while scoring 25 points on just 11 shots, hitting 11-of-14 from the line. Free throws, in fact, were the single largest factor in the game. The Celtics shot a higher percentage -- 50 to 44 -- and made more field goals -- 42 to 32 -- but lost because New Jersey went to the line 41 times, making 34, to their 11 attempts. It was clear which team was the aggressor.

"A lot of the season we've been settling for jump shots at very inopportune times," Lopez said. "Tonight we were very assertive."

It helped that the Celtics were quite the opposite, committing lazy fouls and giving up 18 turnovers and 10 offensive rebounds for a total of 28 extra possessions, handed to the Nets. Those are not problems caused by the absence of Paul Pierce, or by an illness that has gone around the locker room.

"I'm not going to sit up here and give a bunch of excuses," Garnett said. "That's not my style. You lose, you lose. They kicked our [butts] tonight, period point blank.

"Players have to do more, including myself. We all have to dig deep and see what we're made of as a team."

Antawn Jamison's Game

After his forgettable debut game with Cleveland Cavaliers, Antawn Jamison has proven his worth as a Cavalier.

In his first game as a Cavalier against the Charlotte Bobcats, Jamison had an awful performance scoring only 2 points from the stripe, 0-13 from the field composed of few air balls and blocked shots. Cleveland fans in the forums quickly expressed their dismay on Jamison's performance and had doubts on the game of the former all-star forward.

It was really a nightmare-game for Jamison. I was not able to watch that game live but I stay tuned via livescore. He came off the bench (sixth man) for JJ Hickson. According to my friend who was able to watch the game on TV, Jamison evidently struggled with the offensive flow of the Cavs.

But Antawn Jamison has finally showed his stuff against Orlando Magic in a losing effort. He finished with 18 points and shooting decently from the field. Today, the Cavs finally break their 3-game skid with a win over the New Orleans hornets, 105-95. Jamison had his first game as a starter earlier than expected because Hickson had flu-like symptoms. He played for 37 minutes and shot 50% from the field, producing 18 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists.

Despite the win, I think Cleveland is not yet in its best form especially with the current performances of their guards. Mo Williams, Delonte West, Anthony Parker, and D. Gibson are not putting up the numbers just yet. In order for Cleveland to be a formidable team, Lebron and the rest of Cleveland's frontline needs their guards to hit from the outside.

I still believe that Cleveland will grab this year's NBA championship trophy. You can tune into bookmakers and place your bets on that. Go Cavs!

Giants, Kings Looking for Energy, Sizzle to Square Series

THEY are facing opponents who have come out and played as sharp as could be expected.

Yet Barangay Ginebra coach Jong Uichico and Purefoods counterpart Ryan Gregorio are pleading with their players to first hurdle their biggest enemy, ones that lie within themselves.

“We want players that, even when things are not going well, they’ll find a way,” said Uichico.

“They need to step up,” stated Gregorio.

The words came after the Giants and Kings suffered lopsided 104-79 and 99-83 losses to San Miguel Beer and Alaska, respectively, last Wednesday at the start of the 2009-10 KFC PBA Philippine Cup semifinal series at the Araneta Coliseum.

The second games of the best-of-seven duels resume Friday at the Cuneta Astrodome and the urgent calls were made in order for the trailers to avoid falling into a deeper hole.

Coaches Siot Tanquingcen of the Beermen and Tim Cone of the Aces shrugged off their Game 1 victories and pointed out they still need to win three more. They also gave much weight to the physical and emotional fatigue their opponents must still be suffering from after going through gruelling five-game quarterfinal affairs that ended only last Sunday.

Their main task, they added, is to brace for a much-improved adversary Friday.

“We have to make sure we don’t fall into a false sense of security,” said Tanquingcen. “First game, parang feeling-out stage lang. Sa second, parang mentality-wise, they’ll think, ‘Back into another series na.’ That’s the time na talagang bakbakan na.”

“We all know what Ginebra’s like, what coach Uichico’s like,” said Cone. “One thing about Jong, he doesn’t panic and because of that, Ginebra’s not gonna panic. They’re gonna take a deep breath, get more focused, then come out and play better.”

For the losing coaches, however, their players unable to find the will to come out and play with more energy is the very root of the problem.

“Nobody really stepped up except for Kerby (Raymundo) and Ping (Marc Pingris). The others were simply absent,” rued Gregorio.

Raymundo paced the team with 18 points while Pingris had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Roger Yap was the lone other double-digit producer for the Giants with 10.

Three days after scoring 28 points in the clincher against Rain or Shine, James Yap scored only eight points – all on charities – as he went 0-of-8 from the field.

“Unfortunately, James probably went full throttle against Rain or Shine in Game 5 and he didn’t have enough gas for today’s game,” noted Gregorio. “We really need James to step up for us and consistently score in order for us to compete and eventually win against San Miguel.”

James Yap’s main reliever, PJ Simon, still has not fully recovered from a knee injury and Paul Artadi is playing with a hamstring pull. That really puts the burden on the other Purefoods players to chip in more than their usual share.

San Miguel is tough enough, especially since its erstwhile injured players are back into their lethal forms.

Jay Washington, Danny Seigle and Danny Ildefonso, who suited up for a total 13 games in the 18-game eliminations, each had at least 10 points and two rebounds in the series opener, complementing usual go-to guys Arwind Santos, Dondon Hontiveros and Denok Miranda.

“When we (were about to) play San Miguel we just really worked on Arwind Santos, Dondon Hontiveros, Jay Washington. And now we have the two Dannys to prepare for,” said Gregorio.

Another player on the comeback trail, Mark Caguioa, showed the way for Ginebra against Alaska. The man who has played a total of only three games in the eliminations and sparingly used in the quarters wound up with 23 points.

But Sunday Salvacion was the only noticeable chipper for the Kings with 14 points as the likes of JC Intal, Ronald Tubid and Eric Menk were stifled. Worse, Celino Cruz and Menk suffered foot sprains in the opener and are doubtful starters Friday.

Which only aggravates Uichico more as he pointed an accusing finger at some of his remaining players who showed little of the spirit Ginebra is known for.

“Iba naman iyung players that have bad games. There’s a difference between players that have bad games but are trying. Iyun ang importante doon, wala ka nang magagawa doon,” he said. “But players that are not trying, that’s really disappointing.”

Players, teams that may make noise before trade deadline

The NBA is a week away from a trading deadline that has more to do with improving budgets than improving teams.

Well, sure, a handful of championship contenders will explore ways to nip and tuck themselves into better shape and possibly add a missing piece that'll give them an edge come spring and summer. That's always the case in the days leading up to the annual NBA swapping bazaar. Except this year is different.

This year, teams are studying salary averages a lot harder than they are scoring averages. This trading deadline will find plenty of teams trying to dump high salaries and bail from long contracts. This is a coupon-clipping, payroll-snipping, pocketbook-zipping trade deadline.

The teams looking to participate fall into one of three categories: Salary-dumpers hoping to clear cap space for the summer free agent market, cash-strapped teams hoping to chop salary to save money and balance the budget, and title-hunters looking to get-rich-quick by stealing a good player for next to nothing in return. In these risky economic times, and with a labor negotiation upcoming, everybody's trying to take advantage of the situation, one way or another.

As with all trade deadlines, there will be roughly 1,000 players speculated to go this way or that, and by the next day, the landscape will remain virtually unchanged. At least that's what history says. Still, in discussions with general managers, agents and scouts in the last few days, a handful of teams and players will be shopping or be shopped between now and then.

Marcus Camby

Everybody wants Camby. He's attractive because his salary is reasonable ($7.6 million), his contract is expiring and he's still a high volume rebounder and solid shotblocker. Several title-contending teams have called the Clippers about Camby, hoping to rent him for a half-season and perhaps re-sign him. But the Clippers want value in return, not someone who'll eat cap space and keep them from buying a free agent this summer.

Sixers

They're carrying too much bloated weight, with Elton Brand (3 years, $51 million) and Andre Iguodala (4 years, $58 million) owed big money beyond this season, while attendance and results are down significantly. Philly knows an honest rebuilding attempt can't begin until at least one of those contracts is jettisoned. But what team wants to flirt with luxury tax issues by taking either player?

Tracy McGrady

He's got the expiring contract, but nothing else. Nobody knows what he has left, and few teams will give the Rockets anyone of value for him, unless it's a salary dump. If there was a decent offer on the table, he would've been swapped by now. Besides, at this point in his career, can a T-Mac deal be defined as a blockbuster?

Grizzlies

They're about to reach the fork in the road of their season. The Grizzlies are winning, yes, but face a big decision on Rudy Gay. He's a restricted free agent this summer and some team could blow him away with an offer that the cash-strapped Grizzlies can't touch. Does Memphis risk the season and trade him now to get something in return, or keep him and try to strike a deal in July?

David West

With Chris Paul done for the year, the Hornets could take this time to trim costs and spare themselves the luxury tax. West is owed two years and $15.5 million, making him much easier to trade than Peja Stojakovic and Emeka Okafor, a pair of cap-killers.

Caron Butler

The wrecking ball is coming to the Wizards sooner or later. They can get a jump by shipping Butler, the most reasonable trade bait on the club, since the Wizards want to keep Antawn Jamison. Of course, the big issue is Gilbert Arenas, but that'll have to wait until his sentencing next month and the Wizards take a closer look at the fine print on his contract, should he end up doing time.

Bulls

If they really want a shot at Dwyane Wade and perhaps a B-list free agent this summer, then they'll need to free up additional cap room by seeking an expiring contract for Kirk Hinrich and Tyrus Thomas, two expendable players.

Amar'e Stoudemire

The phones are still ringing, but the Suns haven't gotten a decent offer yet. No good team will give up talent for Stoudemire unless they're certain they can re-sign him. Don't be surprised if he finishes the year in Phoenix.

Celtics

A rival GM said he'd be shocked if the faltering Celtics made a major deal involving Ray Allen and his expiring contract, stressing that contending teams don't close shop so suddenly. True enough. While swapping Allen for a decent guard (Iguodala? Kevin Martin?) does make sense on some levels, the Celtics will likely ride out the Allen-KG-Paul Pierce era through one more postseason.

Chris Bosh and Carlos Boozer

A few months ago, they each had a foot out the door, at least it seemed that way. But now the Jazz are winning big. And the Raptors are gaining ground on the Celtics in the division. Suddenly, winning a playoff round doesn't seem so far-fetched. Neither team seems willing to spoil the fun by pulling the plug on the season.

Durant drives Thunder past Hawks for third win in row

NBA All-Stars Joe Johnson of Atlanta and Kevin Durant of Oklahoma City put on an All-Star caliber show for the fans inside a rocking Ford Center, but it was Thunder forward Jeff Green who capped the night for the home team.

Durant, who scored 33 points, found Green alone in the corner, rifled him a pass and Green tossed in a dagger from 23 feet with 1:42 left in the game to lead the Thunder to a 106-99 win over the Hawks.

The big 3-pointer seemed to take the life out of what had been a valliant comeback by Atlanta.

"I saw Jeff was open for a split second," Durant said, "so I threw it to him and I knew he was gonna hit it."

Green did not disappoint, finishing with 19 points inclduing 3-for-4 on 3-pointers.

Durant picked up another double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with his 33 points. Durant has now scored 25 or more in 22 straight games, the longest streak in the NBA since Allen Iverson put together a string of 27 straight in the 2000-01 season.

Hawks coach Mike Woodson was more than impressed and he didn't have to hear the chants of M-V-P coming from the Ford Center crowd to know what he was seeing.

"He's very unique," Woodson said. "I look at him now and he's playing like an MVP candidate in this league. He scores very, very easy. That's hard to do in this league. Only the great ones can do that."

Durant has now scored 30 or more points in 28 games, the most of anyone in the NBA.

"This is a good win to end the homestand on. We beat one of the best teams in the league," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks.

"You have to give them credit because defensively they got after us," Woodson said. "We made a game of it in the fourth by getting back in it."

Johnson put his team on his back in the second half, scoring 23 points to finish with a game-high 37. The Hawks went on a 25-12 run from late in the third quarter to the middle of the fourth, tying the game at 89.

"We gave up a couple of transition 3s and that's just unacceptable," Brooks said.

But from that point on Oklahoma City buckled down on defense and made stops and then made shots at the other end of the floor.

"We shot ourselves out of it by taking bad shots coming down the stretch," Woodson said.

OKC point guard Russell Westbrook took over the game during that time, making several key plays on offense and defense.

"I thought Russell's execution in the fourth quarter was as good as it gets," Brooks said. "He made a lot of great decisions and was aggressive at both ends."

Westbrook just missed a triple-double, scoring 12 points, dishing out nine assists and grabbing nine rebounds.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle where both teams struggled to hit baskets. Neither managed to make 40 percent of their shots with Oklahoma City (27-21) shooting only 37.1 percent and Atlanta (30-17) not much better at 39 percent.

The Thunder came in with the fourth-ranked field goal shooting defense in the NBA, limiting teams to 43.7 percent. Rebounds were almost even with OKC leading 23-22.

The Hawks had a sizeable advantage in a couple of areas at the break, leading in points in the paint, 24-16 and in second chance points, 12-6.

Durant led all scorers at halftime with 20 points, while none of his teammates were in double figures.

Johnson led the Hawks with 14 while Josh Smith added 11 through the first half.

Johnson tried to take over the game in the third quarter when he scored 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting to rally his team from a 13-point deficit to just seven, 79-72 at the end of the third.

Johnson's 37 points on 13-for-20 shooting led all scorers, Josh Smith added 15 for the Hawks and Al Horford contributed 14.

Oklahoma City had a big advantage on the boards, outrebounding Atlanta 45-35, the Thunder pulling down 17 offensive rebounds.

Atlanta lost both games to the Thunder this season but has still won nine of their last 13.

Oklahoma City is now on a three-game winning streak and the Thunder have now won six of their last nine as they head into a three-game road swing before the All-Star break.

LeBron does it all as Cavs earn wire-to-wire win

It's time to start taking the Memphis Grizzlies seriously, and unfortunately for them, the best team in the Eastern Conference did exactly that.

That's pretty much the reason why the Cleveland Cavaliers emerged with an easy 105-89 home win Tuesday night. More accurately, the Cavs refused to overlook a Grizzlies team that used to be considered a gimme on weeknight in February.

Of course, focus isn't an issue for the Cavs (39-11) these days. They have now won nine straight, and a lot of those have come rather easily.

Meanwhile, the forever-improving Grizzlies (26-22) were playing a rare deadly double, with back-to-back games against the best team from each conference on consecutive nights (they beat the Lakers on Monday).

Not surprisingly, the Cavs were never really threatened, beating the Grizzlies in every way imaginable -- to rebounds and loose balls, off the fast break and in the halfcourt. Not surprising because the Griz had to be exhausted, and more so, because the Cavs have just been that good lately.

On Tuesday, it was a systematic route, as the Cavs never trailed and led by as many as 28.

"They did a good job of taking us out of our offense," said Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins. "It was a methodical thing."

As usual, it was also a LeBron James thing. The reigning NBA MVP scored 22 points on 7-for-14 shooting, and that wasn't even when he was at his best. He also recorded 15 assists and yet another one of those chase-down blocks, in which he swats an unsuspecting opponent's shot off the backboard from behind.

Even when James plays less than 40 minutes, as he did Tuesday, he continues to give the league the right to proclaim that it truly is the place Where Amazing Happens.

"He's just a great player," Hollins said. "I don't know that there's much more you can say about him. He sees things that other players don't see. We are in a zone (defense) and he knows what's going on. He attacks the basket then throws it out for a 3-pointer. He attacks the basket, then throws it in for a layup."

Another staple of the Cavs' winning streak has been balance, and that was again the case on this night. Besides James, the Cavs received major contributions from guard Daniel Gibson (16 points, 6-for-11 shooting), forward J.J. Hickson (15 points, 8 rebounds) and center Shaquille O'Neal (13 points, 13 boards). Also, Zydrunas Ilgauskas (14 points) and Anderson Varejao (8 points, tons of hustle) came up big off the bench.

On top of all that, the Cavs were magnificent defensively, particularly when it came to guarding Zach Randolph. The Grizzlies' All-Star forward was limited to eight points, or 13 below his season average, on 3-for-14 shooting.

It's no wonder Cavs coach Mike Brown repeatedly used the word "fun" when describing his team's performance.

"For us to play the way we did defensively was extremely fun to watch," Brown said. "That first half was the most fun half I've had watching my team play this year. Even offensively, we were moving the ball side to side, driving and kicking, playing pick-and-roll on the backside, giving the ball to Shaq at the right time and spacing the right way. It was fun to watch."

It was considerably less enjoyable for the Grizzlies, who shot just 38 from the field, including 2-for-14 on 3-pointers. Just don't ask them if they had tired legs.

"(Monday) night had nothing to do with tonight," Hollins said in reference to the hard-fought win over the Lakers. "Tonight had to do with the Cleveland Cavaliers and what they did defensively and what they were doing offensively. We have been playing back-to-backs all year long, and we are going to continue to play them as long as these kids are in the league."

Rudy Gay led the Grizzlies with 15 points and Jamaal Tinsley contributed 12 off the bench.

The Cavs still have five games remaining on their seven-game homestand, the franchise's longest in 15 years. They are 20-3 at home, having avenged an early-season loss in Memphis.

"We're definitely conscious when we lose to a team," James said. "We wanted to play a better game than we did last time, and definitely came out with the mindset just to play to our abilities."

As an interesting aside, the Cavs are now 20-0 when Hickson scores seven points or more.

"I think it's all developing at one time," Hickson said of his game. "When I get myself going on the defensive end, it improves my offense because I'm more active."

PBA Quarterfinals

Rain or Shine outlasted Coca-Cola Tigers to survive the wildcard and face Purefoods TJ Giants in the quarter finals of the PBA All Filipino Cup. Behind the stellar performance of point guard Solomon Mercado, Rain or Shine is on a good rhythm entering the quarter finals. However, fatigue is the main concern of Rain or Shine because they'll be against the well-rested Purefoods team which is also on a streak this 2010.

Controversial James Yap and team captain Kerby Raymundo will lead the charge for the Giants. But Purefoods has evolved into a better team this season, showing significant improvements in their assists per game output. Their bench headed by KG Canaleta, PJ Simon, Don Allado, and Roger Yap is also performing very well. More than their offensive firepower, Purefoods is the number one defensive team in the PBA today.

On the other end, Talk n Text will battle the injury-plagued Gin Kings. Despite losing their key players to injuries, Ginebra managed to advance to the quarters behind the guns of Cyrus Baguio, Ronald Tubid and JC Intal. This series will surely be a showdown of guards. Jimmy Alapag and Mac Cardona will surely won't back down against Ginebra's backcourt. It will be interesting to see how Ginebra will play defense against Mac Cardona.

At 5pm Purefoods battles Rain or Shine while Brgy. Ginebra Gin Kings faces Talk n Text Tropang Texters in the main game.

NBA 2K10

NBA 2K10 is a basketball video game developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports. It was released on October 6, 2009 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PSP and on October 12, 2009 on PC.

The 2k10 version is not really that far from the NBA 2K9 release. They changed the control configuration a bit. I noticed very minimal improvements in terms of graphics. Gameplay though has really improved.

Like NBA game console fanatic, I'm still dismayed that the 2K series does not support multiplayer mode via local area network (LAN).

PBA: Knockout Wednesday

Expect war in tonight's sudden death match between the Coca-Cola Tigers and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters as the PBA Wildcard phase continues. The winner of tonight's match will advance to the quarter finals and will face the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants.

Coca-Cola defeated Burger King while Rain or Shine busted Sta. Lucia Realtors to seal tonight's battle. Coca-Cola is unbeaten this year. The trade with Burger King proved to be worthy for the Tiger. The sent Wesley Gonzales and ace-guard Alex Cabagnot to the Whoppers in exchange for Gary David and Chico Lanete. The revival of Asi Taulava who missed most of the elimination games due to injury is the main reason why Coke is roaring. Asi is producing double-double numbers each game.

Rain or Shine meanwhile, has been on a slump all season long. Fortunately they managed to win when it mattered the most. They outlasted the more favored Sta. Lucia Realtors in their duel last Sunday. Leading Rain or Shine are Sol Mercado, Gabe Norwood and special mention to their team captain, veteran Eddie Laure.

The 2010 NBA All Star weekend is coming this February. Fans can surely expect a stellar performance from NBA superstars who'll participate in various events.

Leading the cast of superstars are Lebron James and Kobe Bryant. It's also amazing to see how people voted for Tracy McGrady and Allen Iverson for the all-star game. Despite their lousy season, this only proves that the two have made their mark in the league.

The Sprite Slamdunk contest should also be more exciting this season. Although, I'm quite dismayed that Lebron James decided not to participate in this year's slamdunk competition. I guess he realized that he's no match for the other participants. Two weeks ago, Shaquille O'neal even encouraged Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter to join the show together with James for the cause of Haiti earthquake victims.

Cavaliers tops Heat

MIAMI -- LeBron James and Dwyane Wade walked off the court at halftime, smiling toward each other after an epic performance worthy of superstars. At game's end, only James left happy.

James hit two free throws after a scary tumble and blow to the head with 4.1 seconds left for the winning points, and Wade missed a jumper over the reigning MVP's outstretched arm at the buzzer as the Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Miami Heat 92-91 on Monday night.

"It came down to one possession," said James, who matched Wade with a game-high 32 points. "Whoever got the last stop was going to win the game. Luckily it was us."

Wade had 30 at halftime, then only two the rest of the way -- and missed two big free throws with 41.2 seconds left, part of a 1 of 6 showing from the line by the Heat in the fourth quarter.

It cost Miami dearly.

"We put ourselves in the right position," Wade said. "Just mistakes tonight that I made that I normally don't ... cost us."

As great as the back-and-forth between Wade and James was at times, the last half-minute might be all anyone remembers from this one.

Guarding his good friend for the first time all night, Wade blocked James' shot with about 28 seconds left, giving Miami the ball and a one-point lead. But on the ensuing possession, James -- defending Wade this time -- came up with a steal when the league's defending scoring champion tried a wraparound pass, drove in from halfcourt and created what became a frightening scene for both teams.

James and Wade went toward the hoop together, with Quentin Richardson defending as well. Both James and Wade landed awkwardly, and James writhed in pain for about 2 minutes as the entire Cavs' bench came out to check on their fallen leader. He got up, walked Richardson's foul off and made two free throws with 4.1 seconds left for a 92-91 lead.

"For him to get up after that collision and knock down two free throws the way that he did, he's got ice water in his veins, baby," Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. "Ice water."

And in the ensuing huddle, Brown wanted to call a double-team on Wade. The coach was overruled.

"I got D-Wade," James said.

Wade's shot bounced off the iron, and it was over.

"The good, the bad, you're up, you're down," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "I'll take it all with this team."

Shaquille O'Neal scored 19, Daniel Gibson had 15 and Anderson Varejao finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Cleveland.

Wade had 10 rebounds and five assists for Miami. Jermaine O'Neal finished with 18 points, Michael Beasley had 16 and Rafer Alston and Udonis Haslem each scored 10 for the Heat.

Jermaine O'Neal had 14 in the first quarter, Wade had 13 in the period, and Miami was off and running with a 34-24 lead after the first 12 minutes.

That was only the warmup act.

The second quarter was pure theater, Wade vs. LeBron.

So good was the show that hardly anyone noticed that Wade's teammates missed 15 straight shots over a 15 1/2-minute stretch, including 0 for 12 in the second quarter alone. Miami missed 12 straight before Wade made a step-back jumper with 3:37 left in the half put Miami up 40-39, and he followed that up with a 3-pointer while getting fouled by Jamario Moon to ignite the crowd.

James answered, a 3-pointer of his own making it a one-point game again.

It was on.

"The competition," Spoelstra said, "was fantastic."

Wade made a jumper and couldn't contain his grin as the building roared, knowing it was seeing a glorified game of 1-on-1 between two of the game's elite. James cleared everyone else out against Richardson, rebutting with a fallaway jumper of his own.

They were just getting started.

"Two really, really good friends, one of my best friends that I have, just two great competitors not wanting to lose to each other," James said. "But at the same time, knowing that we're putting on a show not only for each other, but for the fans and whoever was watching the game."

Wade missed a free throw with 29 seconds left until intermission, ran down the rebound and gave Miami another possession -- which he capped with a 3-pointer with 6.6 seconds left, flashing dueling "3" signs behind his back after sealing the fourth 30-point half of his career. Undeterred, with 1.2 ticks remaining, James hit -- what else? -- a 3-pointer, cutting Miami's lead to 54-50.

The teams scored 46 points total in the second quarter. James (20) and Wade (17) combined for 37 of them.

And when it was over, the scene in the Miami locker room told the story.

"Tough one, right?" Beasley asked Richardson, who only nodded in silence.

All four instances of Wade scoring 30 in a half have come at home, two of them against Cleveland. ... The teams combined to miss their first 10 shots of the second quarter. ... Cavaliers on a Roll

The Cleveland Cavaliers despite a sluggish start this season is now showing its supremacy in the NBA. Behind the huge numbers from superstar Lebron James, Cleveland managed to stay unbeaten against defending champ Los Angeles Lakers.

Mo Williams is also a steady player for the Cavs this year. The Cavs usually wins when he scores more than 15 in a game. He'll be out for at least a month though with an injury. Bad boy Delonte West is also nursing an injury. High-flying Jamario Moon has become a contributor off the bench with his solid defense and gutsy moves to the basket. Former Raptor Anthony Parker is the regular starter for the Cavs at the shooting guard position and he has delivered well. He should be more consistent though on his outside sniping.

"Big Diesel," Shaquille O'neal is doing just fine with Cleveland. I think coach Mike Brown and the rest of Cleveland management is getting what they expect from Shaq at least at this stage of the season. I believe Shaq's worth will be displayed come playoffs time. It's very fortunate that Shaq has managed to stay away from major injuries this season.

When you talk about Cleveland, you can't miss out on their main gunner, Lebron James. Lebron has been doing it all for Cleveland. Aside from his offensive game, King James provides solid interior defense for the Cavaliers highlighted by chased down blocks on fastbreaks. Remember how he erased Kevin Durant's game-winning attempt to beat Durant and the Thunders. Lebron is a tenacious defender. I'm really very impressed with how he defends because being the best offensive weapon of his team, he doesn't have the mentality of being lousy on the defensive end. He has also professionally managed the issues about him being a free agent next year. Lebron is such a unique, elite basketball player.

I guess it's about time to revive this blog. It's actually amazing how this blog managed to stay at Google PR 2 despite the long time silence.

Anyway, I've decided to get back into this blog. Why? Basically because there's so many things to blog about in the basketball scene here in the Philippines and overseas. It's playoffs time in the PBA while the NBA-All Star week is all set this February in Dallas. The Smart Gilas RP Team is also making some noise in the middle east.

So that's it.. I'm back to this game!

Basketball Time

It's basketball time once again! All the basketball fans are celebrating because NBA and PBA is back with new season.

As I am writing this post, PBA, Asia's first pro league is having it's opening ceremony. The NBA meanwhile is currently on it's pre-season games. There's a lot to look forward to in this two leagues because of the player movements during the off-season.

In the PBA, Purefoods, Ginebra, Coca-Cola and Burger King made major tweaks in the lineup. Of course, the off-season is highlighted by the issue involving 2009 overall first pick, Japeth Aguilar of Burger King. Aguilar, initially refused to sign a 3-year 8.7 million pack from Burger King because of his intention to play for the Smart Guilas National team composed of amatuers and import CJ Guiles under coach Rajko Toroman. However, just last week, things were sorted out and Aguilar is set to play with Burger King for at least a year.

Over at the NBA, La Lakers is still highly favored to go for back to back crown because the team is basically intact. They only lose Trevor Arize but got a solid defender and decent scorer in Ron Artest. Boston is looking to regain it's throne by having a healthy Kevin Garnett for the season and veteran all-star Rasheed Wallace on their bench to lead their 2nd unit. Not to be neglected, is Lebron James and the Cavs. Cavs just got bigger with the Big Diesel, Shaquille O'neal on their roster. Other recruits include Jamarion Moon from Miami and Anthony Parker from Toronto.

Who should be the MVP? Kobe Wade or Lebron

The current NBA season is highlighted with perhaps one of the tightest MVP race ever. Leading the pack are NBA All-star and Olympic gold medalists, Kobe Bryant (LA LAkers), Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat) and Lebron James (Cleveland Cavaliers). The three are having their best season ever.

24 Despite good numbers, Kobe Bryant is said to be less-favored in terms of winning the crown-crowd wise, including myself. I think Kobe is a certified go-to-guy however I'm putting into consideration the roster that the Lakers have. With Gasol, Odom, Bynum (injured) and a veteran point guard in Derek Fisher, Kobe has the core to make him a better player. With a loaded line-up, the Lakers are definitely title contenders. I don't think Kobe has to be at his best in order to pull a win for the Lakers. But the "Black Mamba" comes up big in clutch time.

3 Dwyane Wade is the best comeback story of the year, player wise. After a miserable record last season, the Heat is in solid position for the playoffs this year. Thanks to no less than, Dwyane Wade. After an early exit last year due to injuries, Wade started to make noise of his comeback during the Olympics. Wade had a stellar stint in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Yet, it was only a glimpse of what he's about to do in Miami this year. With improved shooting, Wade has been unstoppable offensively. He's explosiveness has improved a lot-no shades of his past injuries. What makes Wade story sweeter is the fact that Miami is a shallow team plus a rookie coach in Erik Spoelstra. Wade has carried the load for Miami. I hope this team stays long in the playoffs although I don't expect them to be in the conference finals. But "Kudos" to D-Wade!

23 If Cleveland makes it to the NBA finals, hands down it'll be Lebron James. I've seen most of Cleveland games this season and I can say the entire team anchored on King James have vastly improved. No wonder why they hold the best record in the league. James has been "Mr. Everything" for Cleveland, registering triple-doubles. On the side, it has been Cavs point guard and new recruit Mo Williams who have made Cleveland a better squad and made James a stronger player. Mo brings a lot of new dimensions to Cleveland especially on the offensive end.

To answer the title. I would say it's Lebron James but I certainly wouldn't mind Wade winning it.

Sizzling Wade

Dwayne Wade has shown no signs of slowing down after being sidelined last year for several injuries. After being a part of the USA team in the Olympics, he has continued his brilliant performance in the NBA. Despite a relatively weak line-up, Miami is in good position for the NBA playoffs. All thanks to Dwayne Wade. Wade has gone into a rampage. He's logging MVP numbers every game.

Boston is the latest team to bow down to Wade and the rest of the Heat, 99-107. Wade exploded for 32 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 4 assists. With a depleted lineup, Boston struggled to keep up with the Heat's offense. Boston played minus Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo, Glen Davis, Tony Allen and Brian Scalabrine.

Miami has also been performin well after acquiring Jamario Moon and Jermaine O'neal form the Toronto Raptors in exchange for forward Shawn Marion. But certainly, Dwyane is the heart and soul of this squad. In their last 7 outings, check out Wade's numbers:

Rommel Adducul

Diagnosed with the big C disease (nasopharyngeal cancer) 2 years ago, Rommel Adducul went through several medications including chemotherapy in order to win his battle against cancer. Rommel's battle was closely looked after by his fans, basketball community, and the media. Rommel is a product of San Sebastian College and first made noise in the MBA (Metropolitan Basketball Association) where he played for the Metro Manila Stars. The General is back!

Rommel is back in the active roster of Purefoods. He played for the first time since being sidelined last Saturday against Rain or Shine. He saw 11 minutes of action and able to score 2 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, 3 on the offensive end.

Rommel lacked quickness, lateral movement and grip for the ball. In his game, the ball slipped off his hands several times. But all these are understandable. More importantly, he can definitely work on these things. There's always room for improvement for a guy who is more than willing and determined to learn.

I'm just glad to see "THE GENERAL" back in action.

NBA Stars Stay Home

Just when everybody thought that this year's trade deadline would be world-rocking, things went the other way around. Big names like Amare Stoudemire, Vince Carter, Shaq, and other players stayed with their respective teams.

Global financial crisis is the said to be the main culprit for the inability of the teams to move these big names. All teams in the NBA are trying to avoid exceeding allowed team salary cap to avoid further financial damages (NBA luxury tax). It was very hard to shop for teams who are willing to snatch star players because these players are coupled with luxurious contracts.

The Chicago Bulls is on of the few teams that made some trades just before the deadline to beef-up their roster and clean-up their finances. The team acquired Brad Miller and John Salmons from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Drew Gooden, Andres Nocioni, and Cedric Simmons. The Bulls also parted with injury-prone guard Larry Hughes who was sent to New York in exchange for Tim Thomas, Jerome James, and Anthony Robertson.

This trade gives the two teams some salary relief. Hughes makes $12.8 million this year; James and Thomas make $12.2 million combined.

Another interesting trade, or should I say a supposed trade was the between the Oklahoma Thunders and New Orleans Hornets. Hornets' center Tyson Chandler was headed to Oklahoma for Cris Wilcox and veteran Joe Smith. Still a financially-driven trade especially on the part of the Hornets. However, Oklahoma retracted from the trade after Tyson Chandler had his physical tests with the Thunders. The deal was then cancelled. Eventually, Oklahoma moved Cris Wilcox for Malik Rose of the New York Knicks. Chandler remains in New Orleans.

Days before the trade deadline, Jermaine O'neal and Jamarion Moon of the Toronto Raptors were traded to Miami for "The Matrix" Shawn Marion.

Mac-Mac Cardona scored 23 points for the second straight game and Jason Castro broke out of his rookie cell and nearly showcased a triple-double effort as Talk 'N Text turned back Alaska, 93-89, in Wednesday's Game Seven to capture the KFC Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup at the jampacked Araneta Coliseum.

Cardona was named as the Mighty Bond Finals most valuable player, snatching the award after losing the best player of the conference to close buddy Willie Miller, who was not essentially in a groove at a time when the Aces needed him most down the stretch.

Instead, it was Talk 'N Text, which clinched its only second title after winning the 2003 Philippine Cup, that played as if it was the more veteran ball club.

But there were others, too, who sparkled.

Jimmy Alapag sealed the title-clinching free throws with three seconds left for the final count, and Harvey Carey, before that, hit a crucial side jumper that broke the last deadlock at 89 with 1:29 remaining in the game.

TNT coach Chot Reyes, who nailed down his fifth championship as a coach and became only the first man to win three titles with three teams in a tournament without imports, couldn't be happier.

"Barely 16 or 18 months I was in the lowest of coaching depths," said Reyes, referring to the debacle he suffered in the Tokushima FIBA-Asia Championships.

"So for me this is really a validation that I made the right decision to continue coaching, it reinforces my love for the game, and erases somewhat the pain of that Tokushima debacle."

For Alaska, it was one of its most painful losses in a Finals.

They missed four free throws in the last 26.9 seconds, and Miller muffed a baseline drive that could have tied the game at 91. After that, Carey pulled down the rebound that led to a duty foul.

As a result, Alaska blew a 2-0 lead in a best-of-seven series for the third time. The incident, too, was only the sixth time in PBA history that the unwanted outcome occurred.

Moreover, Cone was denied of surpassing Virgilio "Baby" Dalupan as the mentor with the most number of wins. He is currently tied with Dalupan with 601 victories, and he surely would achieve that next conference, the Fiesta Cup.

Miller only scored two points in the fourth period and had 22 overall, and Hugnatan, who single-handedly brought the Aces back into the game in the final period after trailing by as many as 13 points (76-63), pumped in 13 of his 17 points in the fourth period. - GMANews.TV

PBA Import Watch

TalkNText defeated Alaska Aces to claim the KFC PBA All Filipino Cup Crown. And so, all teams are now looking forward for the upcoming import-plague conference, the Motolite PBA Fiesta Cup.

Most of the teams are recalling former imports. Teams settling for tried and tested imports are Burger King (formerly Air21) with Shawn Daniels, Coca-Cola Tigers with JJ Sullinger but is said to be replaced by James Penny by March, Rain or Shine with Charles Clark, and the Gin Kings with hotshot Rod Nealy. Parading new imports are Sta. Lucia Realtors with Arthur James Jackson, and the TJ Giants with high-flyer Reggie Larry.

San Miguel Beermen, Alaska, Bull Barakos and recently crowned TalkNText Tropang Texters have yet to name their imports.

This will definitely be a run and gun conference. Games will certainly be high-scoring with the imports providing offensive firepower for their respective ball clubs. Meanwhile, cancer survivor, Rommel Adducul is reported to be in very good shape. According to Purefoods governor Rene Pardo, Adducul undergoes heavy training to regain and even improve his strength. Mr. Pardo assured the Adducul's fans that "The General" will be seeing action this Fiesta Cup.

PBA Teams get busy

Following the major player movements of the Gin Kings, Purefoods, and Air21 which is now Burger King, teams are certainly busy reshaping, tweaking their rosters. Aside from getting the best import, player movements are very crucial.

Purefoods added offensive threats to address their problem of having Kerby Raymundo and James Yap as their go-to-guys, which made the team's offense so predictable. The new acquisitions also add muscle and experience to the team as both Allado and Canaleta has been in the league for a while now. Canaleta certainly has the potential to be McGrady or Kobe type of player. He's agile, quick, can dribble, shooot, basically can score. I really hope he can finally bloom with Purefoods. Allado, the role player that he is, I'm sure he'll fit in Purefoods.

The Kings get young blood in Intal, Kramer and point guard Lanete. Burger King gets Belga, Alonzo and future draft picks of Ginebra. Well, they already stole Celino Cruz and Cyrus Baguio earlier this season so they are loaded at the guard positions. Belga will fit in.

As of now players are busy watching NFL TV as most team are to start their dirty work by February. NFL TV package, NFL Sunday ticket are up for grabs.

Seven players will be wearing new uniforms when the PBA’s Fiesta Conference opens shop next month.

Purefoods TJ Giants, hampered by injuries to players expected to deliver on offense this season got two talented players in Don Allado and Nino Canaleta from Air21. The Giants had to let go of Beau Belga, Chad Alonzo, Chico Lanete and their 2013 draft pick.

“We have acknowledged identified our weakness in the last conference which is scoring. Those two will definitely help us to more or less address our choke point because they are known as good offensive players,” said coach Ryan Gregorio when contacted by SportsNews.ph.

Gregorio said his team has become predictably a Kerby Raymundo-James Yap team especially down the stretch and now feels his new recruits will help a lot in addressing that problem.

"It will definitely alleviate our problems in relying too much from James and Kerby in scoring. One thing certain is that we will play according to their strengths. KG is probably the best finisher in the open court,” said Gregorio “You give him the ball, he knows what to do with it. We will try not to make things complicated. With them on board it will open up the paint for us.”

The Express meanwhile immediately shipped Lanete along with JC Intal and Doug Kramer to Barangay Ginebra for the Gin Kings 2012 and 2013 draft picks.

“For me it’s not really a blockbuster trade because we feel it will just fill in our injured spots. It’s not really a trade that will turn the team around. It will help the team but it’s more on answering the need to fill in our injured spots,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

Uichico said Junthy Valenzuela recently underwent operation which the multi-titled mentor refused to divulge. Uichico however said Valenzuela will be out of commission for about six to eight weeks.

Uichico added that they have no idea when superstar Mark Caguioa will be back. Caguioa also underwent knee operation late last year by Los Angeles Lakers team physician Steve Lombardo.

Uichico hopes his two new additions will help solve their needs sooner than expected.

“Doug is young but we’ll see what he can do. For sure it will help our frontline. We really have more five’s than we have four’s,” said Uichico “JC and Doug have good potentials but potential is potential. We still have to see if they will be able to do what I want them to do.”

Meanwhile Gregorio said management have already reached an agreement with their import Reggie Larry, a former Boise State standout who had a short stint with the Golden State Warriors during the league’s summer tournament last year.

In one of the best sudden-death match-ups in the PBA, San Miguel Beermen managed recovered from 21-point deficit in the 3rd to snatch a 98-93 victory over the crowd-favorite Brgy. Ginebra Kings.

Ginebra controlled the game right at the tip-off especially when Olsen Racela was called for a flagrant foul penalty 2 as he placed his foot on the landing lot of Jayjay Helterbrand gunning for a 3-pointer. Racela's ejection led to Helterbrand's rampage scorching SMB from the rainbow country. Helterbrand finished with 30 points but was held down to only 10 in the 2nd half. SMB haunted BGK in the 3rd with their fullcourt press and Dondon Hontiveros turned on his hot shooting. Rookie Bonbon Custodio also stepped up especially in the 4th, tricking Ginebra with his daredevil drives to the hoop.

It's a sour defeat for Ginebra. I could only imagine the misery of the Ginebra fans who were already celebrating in the 3rd when the Gin Kings established huge lead and had their shots falling from everywhere. Then, there came the San Miguel juggernaut.

SMB advances to the semis facing well-rested Talk n Text Tropang Texters. This only shows that the two teams made the right moves during the off-season. Recall that the two got involve on a draft day trade which sent Jay Washington to SMB for SMB's 3rd draft pick. TnT then selected spitfire pointguard Jason Castro.

Baguio, Cruz traded to Air21

Well, it didn't take too long before I got the answer to my previous post. Beating the trade deadline, Air21 makes a deal which is very much in the team's favor unlike the trade involving Ranidel de Ocampo several weeks ago. RP team member Cyrus Baguio and veteran point guard Celino Cruz is now with Air21 Express.

Everyone is busy preparing for Christmas. But Air21 and Red Bull were all business as usual.

The Express and the Barakos agreed on a four-player swap on Christmas Eve in one of the many exciting things to happen before the deadline of player elapses tomorrow.

The Express grabbed from the deal high-leaping swingman Cyrus Baguio and cerebral guard Celino Cruz in exchange for two first-round future picks.

"We have already addressed our problem on the center spot by getting JR Quiñahan earlier, and Don Allado lately. Now, we have secured the services of talented guards in Baguio and Cruz, making the guard spots more complicated," said Alvarez.

There were reports that Arwind Santos, Air21's franchise player, is reportedly being wooed by Talk N Text, but Alvarez said they are not keen on giving up their leading Most Valuable Player candidate last season.

The Express recently agreed to trade Ranidel de Ocampo for Allado and the Tropang Texters' first-round pick.

"People might think it would be easy for Talk N Text to get Arwind, but he's our franchise player," said Alvarez.

By getting the services of Baguio, the Express' wing rotation has become more congested with Gary David, Arwind Santos, KG Canaleta and JC Intal playing the no. 2 and no. 3 spots. Rey Joble - Manila Standard Today

I disagree with the author's note regarding the congestion on the 2-guard position. Looking at Air21's line-up, only Gary David is the legit and effective shooting guard. Cyrus Baguio can definitely share the position with David. Celino Cruz meanwhile, will help Arboleda orchestrating the offense and he's another defensive guard like Arboleda.

Cyrus Baguio is reportedly also on the way out of Red Bull and is heading for either Air21 or Talk n Text.

According to reports, the Red Bull management has committed Baguio plus point guard Celino Cruz in a trade deal to be formalized before the league trading deadline on the last play date of the elimination round either tomorrow or Sunday.

“I would be very happy if that report is true. I will not deny that I have approached Red Bull, looking to acquire Baguio, Cruz and Larry Rodriguez,” said Air21 governor and team manager Lito Alvarez.

Red Bull governor Tony Chua denied knowledge of the trade.

However, league sources confirmed the deal, including those from the teams which had tried to work out a deal for Baguio.

Ranidel de Ocampo, Don Allado switch uniforms

It's almost the end of eliminations but teams are still determined in reshaping their rosters in preparation for a tight battle for the all Filipino Cup finals. Talk n Text, a team that certainly needs a reliable inside operator lets go with Don Carlos Allado for Ranidel de Ocampo. Ranidel will be reunited with his brother Yancy. TnT also gave their first-round pick in 2012 to the Express. Don Allado originally drafted by Alaska is now with Air21.

This move is definitely in favor of Talk n Text, which makes me wonder why the Express agreed to such one-sided deal. Pound for pound, Ranidel is way better than Don Allado in all aspect of the game. What's more mind buggling is that Air21 actually lacks big players to man the 4 and 5 spots. They only have JR Quinahan and Homer Se. Let's see how this trade works out for both teams.

DLSU Snatches PCC Crown

I was able to watch the Final 4 games and also the Finals of the prestigious 2008 Philippine Collegiate Championship(PCC). The final 4 matches were both nail-biting games. ADMU escaped the relentless Knights by a single point while the San Beda failed to keep the lead against scrappy DLSU.

I would have preferred a finals showdown between San Beda and Ateneo in the finals because I wanted to see the Ekwe-Al Hussaini match-up. Anyways, the finals featured a rematch of the this year's UAAP finals, DLSU versus ADMU. The Blue Eagles played without ace guard Cris Tiu (entire PCC) and rookie sensation Ryan Buenafe (finals match).

The Eagles struggled with the pressure defense of DLSU. The team committed a lot of turnovers which translated to tons of turnover points. ADMU's main man Rabeh Al-Hussaini also played a poor game. He picked up two early fouls in the 1st quarter and never got back on track since then.

De La Salle University bounced back from its disappointing loss in the UAAP by defeating Ateneo de Manila University, 71-62, to capture the 2008 Philippine Collegiate Championship at the Araneta Coliseum.

JV Casio sizzled for 17 of his 20 points in the second half while adding six rebounds, six assists and three steals to be named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

It was a fitting end to Casio’s collegiate career, two months after the Archers got swept aside by the Blue Eagles in the UAAP finals.

And for head coach Franz Pumaren, he was glad to steered the Taft-based squad to the national championship.

“Well at least we won a big one,” said Pumaren. “I thought we would be zero this ‘08 but at least based on this tournament, we are the number one collegiate team in the country.”

Trailing 29-28 entering the second half, the Archers erected a telling 17-4 capped off by a teardrop shot by Casio at the 5:19 mark for a 45-33 advantage.

From there, it was all La Salle as Ateneo’s closest threat came at 51-46 at the end of the third before Casio uncorked 10 points in the pivotal period that sealed the title.

DLSU also received the Manny V. Pangilinan Perpetual Trophy and 1,000,000 pesos cash prize, half of it going to the winning squad. They will also represent the country in the 2009 Universiade in Serbia.

“Probably wanting to redeem themselves and wanting to be the top team in the country was their motivation,” said Pumaren. “That’s why it is so satisfying for us because everybody wanted to participate and they were really serious about this tournament.”

Peejay Barua was the other double-digit scorer with 10 points while Bader Malabes and Ferdinand added eight and seven, respectively.

Jai Reyes led all scorers with 22 points and shot 6-of-12 threes in the game while Rabeh Al-Hussaini added 10 points and four boards but shot a poor 2-of-10 clip from the field. The Blue Eagles claimed 500,000 pesos for their bridesmaid finish.

Despite the height disadvantage, the Archers managed to dominate the Eagles, 53-39, in the rebounding department while allowing Ateneo to shot just 25 percent from the floor.

Ateneo played minus UAAP rookie of the year Ryan Buenafe, who was sick, Jobe Nkemakolam and Chris Tiu, who watched Manny Pacquiao‘s victory over Oscar dela Hoya in Las Vegas.

“This is not the same team that played in the UAAP so what can we do,” said Black. “But congratulations to La Salle, they deserved the win.”

Meanwhile, Colegio de San Juan de Letran managed to beat NCAA champion San Beda, 75-67, to take home third place plus 200,000 pesos.

The Knights leaned on RJ Jazul’s 17 points and six rebounds and Dino Daa’s 16 points and nine rebounds as they pull away from the Red Lions in the final canto.

Sam Ekwe, playing his last match as a Red Lion, scored 21 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots in a losing cause. JR Tecson and Ogie Menor added 11 and 10 markers each.

Casio, Al-Hussaini, Jazul, Nonoy Baclao and Rico Maierhofer were all named to the tournament’s Mythical Five selection.

Move on Air21 Express

A bitter Air21 Express just got their hearts crushed even more as SMB demolished the Express, 98-78. Air21 had a lot of words coming into the game, saying it would be their redemption game and they have something to settle with San Miguel Beermen. It all started SMB stole the win during their first meeting because of a faulty call by the referee. Ranidel de Ocampo's three-point shot was called as a two pointer pushing the game to overtime and SMB eventually triumphed.

Air21's headcoach Bo Perasol and the team managament have pleaded their case and made the necessary appeal with still no success. Now, it has been reported that the bitter team will bring their case to the Games and Amusements Board.

Air21 lost its appeal to the PBA board by a vote Wednesday and said it will take its case to the Games and Amusement Board, marking, if ever, the first time that the government agency will be made a part in making a crucial league decision.

I've seen that game of Air21 and SMB and it was definitely a faulty call since de Ocampo's shot was really a 3-pointer. My point is, it seems that the team has gone too far. They have established their point. But with the denials of their appeals, I guess it's only proper to let go of the case. It was just a single game and wouldn't spell their status at the end of the All-Filipino Cup. They should be professional enough to take blows.

Also, the league didn't deny the error of the referees but with the current rules the call and result of the game sticks.

Move on Air21.

Knicks acquire Thomas, Harrington, Mobley

The reshaping New York Knicks depart with Zach Randolph, Jamal Crawford and Mardy Collins today. Crawford goes to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for versatile big man Al Harrington. Meanwhile, Randolph and Collins are now with the Los Angeles Clippers who released Cuttino Mobley and forward Tim Thomas.

Not really an interesting trade to me. It's not one of those wtf trades.hehehe Clearly the Knicks get the best of this deal. Despite losing Jamal and Zach, they've acquired reliable veterans who are more of role players which I think what Mike D'Antoni favors. Moreover, this makes their salary cap in better shape especially come 2010. It's no secret that New York is eager to get Lebron James as his contract expires by 2010.

I wonder what Don Nelson, headcoach of the Warriors is up to. With the departure of Al Harrington, he only has Brandon Wright and Rony Turiaf to rely on at the power forward position. The two are more of off-the-bench type of players at least this season. Getting Jamal Crawford who demands and I would say deserves playing time would certainly tighten their guard rotation especially when Monta Ellis gets back from suspension. At my count, I think they have 8 guards(PG/SG).

On the next trade update, I hope having Cleveland mentioned. *wink

Anyways, since I am a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers, I'd like to discuss on why they should get Antonio Mcdyess who is currently at a lost after being traded to Denver together with Chauncey Billups and Samb for AI. Mcdyess opted not to play with Denver and preferred contract buyout.

Antonio McDyess had a good run with Detroit. He has improved his perimeter shooting and still has the smooth finish under the rim. Add that to his active defense and intense rebounding. Mcdyess will perfectly fit with the Cavs. Cleveland is obviously missing a guy like Joe Smith who could post up and hit perimeter shots on a regular basis. Ben Wallace's performance so far this season is far from impressive and rookie JJ Hickson still has a long way to go. Dyess can be vital if the Cavs want another crack at the elusive NBA trophy.

RP Roster by Guiao

Coach Yeng Guiao announced today his RP selection. I was able to listen to his live phone patch interview at NBN Sports this afternoon. It's surprising that Dondon Hontiveros is not included in the line-up.

RP basketball team for World qualifiers named

MANILA, Philippines - Another all-star team has been assembled. This time, the country hopes the result will be different.

RP basketball head coach Yeng Guiao announced on Thursday the roster of the national team that will compete in the Fiba-Asia men's championship next year, the qualifying tournament for the World Championship.

Among Guiao's choices include four players who have combined to win five of the last six MVP awards, led by two-time Philippine Basketball Association MVP Willie Miller and reigning MVP Kelly Williams.

Besides Miller and Williams, RP coach Yeng Guiao also tabbed Ranidel de Ocampo, JayJay Helterbrand, Gabe Norwood, Mick Pennisi, Kerby Raymundo, and former MVPs James Yap and Asi Taulava.

All players mentioned except for Miller were on the squad that appeared in the Olympic qualifiers for Asia held last year in Japan.

Guiao also picked out Cyrus Baguio, Jared Dilinger, Arwind Santos, Ryan Reyes, and Sonny Thoss.

The Fiba-Asia tournament will be held September 1 to 9, 2009 in Guangzhou, China. The World Championship will be from August 23 to September 12 in Istanbul, Turkey.

"We plan to start practicing on Monday [at The Arena in San Juan] and invite all players to the line up for orientation dinner," Guiao said during the team presentation held at the league office in Libis, Quezon City.

"We'll talk about the philosophy of the team, set the objective and bond together for the first time."

The average height of the team is six feet and four inches, a ceiling Guiao called "not bad enough".

"This is not as big as I want it to be. We even wanted to have a naturalized player, but Mick and Asi are here. At least they can provide size to a certain degree," Guiao said, adding that the team's speed and perimeter shooting will try to offset the lack of the height.

Guiao did not discount the possibility of adding two more players, one of who could be Japeth Aguilar.

Guiao stressed that the composition of the team was "really a product of the coaching advisory group," referring to the council of former national coaches including Robert Jaworski, Norman Black, Tim Cone, Jong Uichico and Chot Reyes. - GMANews.TV

Comparing to my RP roster, I missed Ryan Reyes, Cyrus Baguio and Jared Dillinger. This ain't the final roster yet. In fact West Kentucky center Japeth Aguilar could most likely be inserted in the roster by May next year.

Jimmy Alapag on Trading Block

Jimmy "The Mighty Mouse" Alapag is recently reported to be in the trading block of Talk n Text Tropang Texters. Despite his decent play, Talk n Text has yet to string wins in the KFC All Filipino Cup of the PBA. Alapag has less playing time with the entry of spitfire point guard Jason Castro. Castro was picked third by TnT at the expense of forward Jay Washington. Turning 31 this 30th of December, Jimmy is still one of the premeire point guards in the league. In fact, his name is dragged on to the candidates for the RP roster under coach Yeng Guiao. I'm pretty sure he's still a juicy trade bait and other teams will certainly look to snatch him.

Where could Jimmy possibly go to?

Coca-Cola Tigers - Why? Simple. Coke is also a struggling team. Main reason why they would want to land Jimmy is to reunite him with center Asi Taulava. The two played sweet music together over at Talk n Text.

San Miguel Beermen - With Mike Cortez's ACL injury which sidelines him for about 6 months, SMB must be cooking something to get Jimmy. Among the teams also, roster wise, SMB has players to give out.

Purefoods TJ Giants - Just like SMB, Purefoods is in need of a point guard. Despite Topex Robinson's decent play, with the uncertaintly of Roger Yap's condition, PF might just find a little Giant in Jimmy. The problem is who will they give out.

Ow well, let's just wait and see. According to the news, Alapag will be a package deal meaning other TnT players will be involved. A 3-way trade (3 teams) is a big possibility.

Sweet chat: Calderon and Garnett

This scene shows a Kevin Garnett beyond his caliber. As famous, classy NBA star that he is, I thought this is one of his ugliest moments. What made it uglier is that he wasn't called for a T. At least for taunting (given that he pointed his finger at Calderon).

Good thing Jose Calderon responded to Garnett. That's how you earn respect.

Pistons land Iverson for Billups, McDyess, Samb

It was a relatively quiet off-season for most of the big teams in the NBA. But, just a week after the season opened, the Pistons and Nuggets agree to make some noise. Detroit traded three players in Chauncey Billups, Antonio Mcdyess, and Cheikh Samb for all-star Allen Iverson of Denver.

AI's contract is expiring, and I heard in the news just 2 weeks ago that he wouldn't want to be traded anymore. He'd rather sacrifice cutting his salary just to stay in Denver. In three games with the Nuggets this season, Allen is averaging 18.7 points and 6.7 assists. The departure of AI will certainly give JR Smith more playing time. He'll (JR) be the primary shooting guard of the Denver. Billups will be bringing his point guard smarts to a team that has no reliable point guard. Before the trade, Denver relies on Chucky Atkins, Anthony Carter and AI to man the point. As pointed out in the article from nba.com, Mcdyess doesn't want to be in Denver and he might just opt to retire or go for a contract buyout. If this happens, Denver must search for a reliable forward to help out Kenyon Martin and Nene.

On the flip-side, Detroit gets an exciting offensive player in AI. Iverson has been a crowd favorite all through out his career. He will not be able to take the role of Billups but he'll provide the offensive firepower that Pistons might just be lacking to get back to the finals. With the impressive play of Rodney Stuckey and Jason Maxiell last season, the two will fill the holes vacated by key players' Billups and Mcdyess.

Rich Alvarez Newest Giant

Purefoods get another Barako in the person of Rich Alvarez. The 2004 number one draft pick is now with Purefoods in exchange for the Giants' 1st round pick in 2011.

The Giants holding a 2-4 win-loss card this season lacks a legitimate small forward and Rich might just be perfect to fill the position. I think Rich is an active defender. He has the height and speed to keep up with speedy forwards in league. Rich reunites with former Barako-mates Topex Robinson, Enrico Villanueva, and Paolo Bugia. This reunion is a hidden advantage. This four players can inject something new to Purefoods.

I expect Purefoods to start string some wins from here on. Rich might just be the missing puzzle.

My shot: This is definitely a positive move on the part of Purefoods. Rich can provide defensive intensity and energy just like what Pingris used to provide for Purefoods. I just hope he can stay healthy and improve on his offense. I think he's worth Purefoods' 2011 1st round draft pick. On the Red Bull side, I just don't know what the management is up to. I guess they're cooking something big for next year.

*With the addition of Rich Alvarez, Purefoods also acquire a new celebrity fan in singer Kyla, Rich's girlfriend. hehehehe

NBA Opening Games Analysis

I was lucky enough to watch the three opening games of the new season of the NBA. Good news is, Basketball TV or bTV is back over SkyCable channel 33.

Cleveland vs Boston : 85-90

This game was definitely a treat especially the fans of Celtics. It seems like every Celtic is in high spirits and overflowing confidence coming from last season's championship run. Kevin Garnett was not in his usual form, shooting wise while Paul Pierce was on target right from the tip-off. Tony Allen and Leon Powe provided energy and scoring from the bench. The two scored at least 10 points. It was an ugly game for King James fanatics because Lebron failed to play the hero's role at crunch time. He muffed crucial free throws. If I remember it right, he only made a single field goal in the fourth. I was impressed with Mo Williams. He provides the Cavs with speed and clutch shooting from beyond the arc.

Milwaukee vs Chicago : 95-108

Looks like Chicago's trade deals last season and rookie draft acquisitions will pay-off this season. The team had a very good debut against Milwaukee. First overall draft pick, Derick Rose showed he can play the starting point and alongside Kirk Hinrich. The rookie sensation was one assist shy of a double-double performance finishing with 11 points and 9 assists. He's not the flashy type of a player but he gets the job done as a point guard. Chicago's backcourt is now more reliable and it seems that the players have adjusted with the rotations. Before, playing time was an issue with Ben Gordon. Milwaukee on the other hand didn't have the spunk to compete against Chicago. They played flat. Michael Redd had 30 points while new recruit, Richard Jefferson finished with 15.

Portland vs Los Angeles (LAL) : 76 -96

After today's game, a lot of Portland fans are perhaps in dismay with center Greg Oden. Oden limped early in the first quarter. Looking at him, I think he really lacks the legs for his body and size. The game was an all LA show. Bright spot for Portland is Spaniard Rudy Fernandez. Just like what he did in the Olympics, Rudy displayed his beautiful touch from the outside and his basketball smarts.

Coach Yeng Guiao, appointed head coach of the RP basketball squad will be announcing a 15 man roster in two weeks time. This is perhaps one of the most difficult task to do because this is where real work begins.

A notable recruit also is ex-Blue Eagle, Japeth Aguilar. Japeth, now listed at 6'10" is currently in the US NCAA Division 1 team, Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. It would be very exciting to see this young, pure-blooded Filipino to play for our country.

NBA Live 09 at Wii

Nintendo Wii is one of the enjoyable ways to get slim and fit. Now, I wonder how playing NBA live in Wii feels like.

I bumped in the 09 release of NBA Live for Wii. Here's some words from EA regarding the game - "Step onto the court and into the fun with a unique basketball experience designed exclusively for the Wii. NBA Live 09 All-Play offers more action, more often, with an over-the-top basketball experience designed with everyone in mind. Improved responsiveness and more control options make this game easier and more fun to play than ever before."

Wish I could shop for one. By the way, Wii is a home video game console released by Nintendo. A distinguishing feature of the console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detect movement in three dimensions. Another distinctive feature of the console is WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode.

Kinda of topic but I'd like to mention that I am currently downloading files for NBA Live 2k9, PC version. Yep Yep.

Rain or Shine escapes Purefoods

I was planning to watch the delayed telecast of the out of town game featuring Rain or Shine against Purefoods. Two teams on a slump. However, upon hearing that Purefoods once again failed to snatch a win, I've changed my plans.

Here's the news update from www.gmanews.tv:

Rain or Shine overcame a slow start behind a strong finishing kick as it edged out Purefoods in overtime, 88-84, to snap its losing skid in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup Thursday night at the Olivarez College gym in Paranaque.

Back-up guard Don Dulay drained a big three-pointer with 76 seconds left in the extra period to break the game’s final deadlock and put the Elasto Painters on top for good, 86-83.

Kerby Raymundo split his free throws to make it a two-point game, but the Giants bungled two potential-game winning plays as Chico Lanete and James Yap missed successive three-point shots, allowing Rain or Shine to escape with the hard-earned win.

Jay-R Reyes had 23 points to pace the Elasto Painters, whose two-game losing streak came to an end and improved to 3-2.

Gabe Norwood added 18, Sol Mercado 17 while Dulay 11, including the two free throws that sealed the game in the final five seconds.

Peter June Simon topscored with 23 markers in another losing cause for the Giants, who suffered their fourth straight setback to join the Coca-Cola Tigers down the cellar with a 1-4 card.

It was a heartbreaking loss for Purefoods which opened up the game with a big 15-0 run following a blazing start that caught Rain or Shine by surprise.

But Reyes and Mercado led a big Elasto Painters comeback in the second half. A pressure-packed three-pointer by the Rain or Shine rookie with 34 seconds to go in regulation put the team in front, 79-77.

James Yap sank two free throws with 25 seconds to tie the game at 79.

The Giants had a chance to win it in regulation after Wainwright bungled the Elasto Painters’ final play by committing a traveling violation.

But without a timeout left, Purefoods failed to convert, paving the way for the overtime. – GMANews.TV

Purefoods fans we'll even be more dismayed. Movements to oust coach Ryan Gregorio will certainly be louder.

Mike Cortez suffers ACL

"Not once but twice!" Cool-cat Mike Cortez is once again sidelined because of no less than ACL injury on his right knee. He'll be out for six months. Recall that he suffered the same injury on his left knee while with Alaska Milk back in 2006.

I saw it when Cortez went down to the floor holding his knee. I thought it wasn't that bad since he was able to stand-up and walk. This is really a bad news for the fans of Mike Cortez. His being injury-prone was a big issue when he was shipped to SMB.

ACL or anterior cruciate ligament injury is extreme stretching or tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee. A tear may be partial or complete.

ACL may occur from coming to a quick stop with a directional change while running, pivoting, landing, or overextending the joint in either direction

Rain or Shine: Norwood and Mercado

If you talk about Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (formerly Welcoat Dragons), then first on your agenda would be these two guys. Gabe Norwood, the overall 1st draft pick and Solomon Mercado, the 5th draft pick of Alaska (traded to Welcoat) are the heart and soul of this young team.

Mercado had the most impressive debut among the rookies exploding for 29 points. Norwood meanwhile has yet to show his A-game, at least in my opinion. Norwood has preferred to be a passer, an orchestrator in their games so far. I believe he still has a lot to show, especially on the offensive end.

The future certainly looks shiny for Rain or Shine. They may not instantly be a title contender this season, some more additions in their roster plus experience, they'll surely get there.

Robin Lopez

I was able to watch the pre-season game of the Phoenix Suns playing against Denver Nuggets. Hoping to see impressive rookies, 7 footer Robin Lopez caught my attention. The 15th overall pick takes the role as the back-up center for the aging Shaquille O'neal.

A product of Stanford University, Robin Lopez is not as athletic and skilled as his twin brother Brooke Lopez. Nevertheless, Robin has the potentials to make a name in the big league. I was impress with his timing on going up for blocks. He definitely has the wing span to block or at least intimidate shots down low. He is a good post defender. He's not a scoring machine but he makes a living on put backs, drop passes, and from garbage plays. The big guy can also run up and down the court, something that O'neal has passed up already.

Denver playing without Melo and AI won the game, 77-72. Robin Lopez had 8 points, 5 rebounds, 7 blocks. The young center still has a lot to improve. But definitely he's an asset to Phoenix. He'll get better as the season progresses.

Game Preview" Rain or Shain vs San Miguel

Wednesday, 15th of October, undefeated Rain or Shine Elasto Painters will collide with the San Miguel Beermen. After two impressive wins by Rain or Shine, the team has certainly earned respect and attention of the media, fans, and the PBA community.

Gabe Norwood and Solomon Mercado have proven their worth in the PBA after leading their team to consecutive wins against Red Bull and Air21 Express. San Miguel meanwhile has bounced back from a sour loss to Sta. Lucia beating Purefoods in their second outing. SMB, despite giving up 3rd pick Jason Castro to TnT seems to found a gem in 8th pick, Bonbon Custodio. The 6 foot guard from the University of the East showed brilliance in the team's first two games.

Norwood-Seigle match-up is certainly something to look forward to. Norwood maybe too skinny for Danny Seigle but he can certainly sky with Seigle. Solomon Mercado's offense will also be put to test against the pesky guards of Beermen like Dondon Hontiveros.

These are the ticket rates for watching the PBA live at the Araneta Coliseum. If you noticed, ticket price is higher during Sunday games just like the NFL Sunday Ticket. I would love to watch PBA games live. If I'd be in Manila, I will surely spend some penny to watch in the Big Dome. With sensational rookies like Sol Mercado, Gabe Norwood, Jared Dillinger, Jason Castro and many more, the PBA has become more appealing to the basketball fanatics.

I think it would be good to look at the possibilty of establishing a PBA TV. A channel that would air only PBA games, current and classic games and include PBA-related programs. It would be like Basketball TV and NFL TV. Flexible packages must be offered in order to make it attractive to the viewers. I've learned that NFL TV Package offers a wide variation of rates for the subscribers to choose from.

Meanwhile, I have to mention that Solar Sports over CS9 is doing a good job in covering the PBA games. True to what they promised, they gave the PBA a new look and feel in terms of the coverage. However, in some PBA forums, there are negative reactions to the commentators for being to strict in speaking english.

No PC version for NBA Live 2009

Looks like that's how it's going to be...

Earlier this year, EA Sports announced that it will not be producing a PC version for the much awaited NBA Live 2009. *sigh! Now as the official release date for the Xbox360 is near, there's still no signs of good news for NBA Live fanatics (PC) like me.

"IGN: Will there be any further EA Sports games on the PC?

Peter Moore: We're doing two this year – we're doing FIFA and we're doing NHL. For business reasons they're very viable. FIFA in particular, because it's a strong business – and console penetration where soccer is powerful – which of course, is everywhere – is weak sometimes, and people have PCs. I can go to my dev team and I can look at the numbers and say it's worth investing millions of dollars to create the PC version of FIFA. Same with NHL, particularly if you're pushing into Eastern Europe and into Russia where we're doing a lot of investment with our hockey franchise. But there are others where we're just losing money. And I reserve the right not to lose money. And my team – as you know, in any job if you do well you get more compensation. It's a difficult conversation to have – am I going to go develop for the PC where, by the way, we're going to lose money and not make a bonus. How do you think about that? It's not fair to these guys. And piracy's an issue – there's not enough sales to justify it, and we do just about every other platform. If you want console, you want your DS, your Wii experience – which takes a team now because you need a brand new Wii experience – eventually you run out of resources and you say we're just not selling enough on the PC and you make a very hard business decision. And then you have this very unique conversation going on now on the blog. I'm trying to think if this has ever happened in our industry where I state my case. It's entertaining and people want me dead, or hung, drawn and quartered."

Solomon Mercado shines

5th overall draft pick, Solomon Mercado outshined this year's 1st overall pick Gabe Norwood in their debut in the pro league against Air21 Express. Mercado sizzled for 29 points, converting 5/10 from the rainbow country. Norwood managed just 6 markers going 2/8 from the field. Nevertheless, the Elasto Painters crushed the Express, 120-102

The bulky guard who was originally drafted by Alaska landed on Rain or Shine via the Joe Devance trade showed speed and range in his first game. He can play the 1 and 2 positions. Plus, I thought his defense was superb. But the most notable about his game is his ability to slash into the paint and finish strong. He's an effective one-on-one player. He uses his lightning quick crossover to leave his defender and uses his upper body strength to surpass incoming defenders. He also has the energy on and off the court that seems to channel to his teammates. That makes him more valuable. Definitely the Elasto Painters got a bright color in this rookie.

Note: Mercado's 29 points is the highest debut output by a rookie since Asi Taulava had 32 for Talk 'N Text in 1999 against Tanduay.

Ateneo takes Game 1

Behind 23,000 ++ souls in Araneta Coliseum, the Ateneo Blue Eagles proved that they are the number one team in the UAAP today, beating De La Salle University 69-61.

To sum it up, gamestory would simply be dominance for the Eagles and sour shooting for the Archers. Rabeh Al Hussaini played tight in the early going but went on a rampage in the second half. Rookie Ryan Buenafe lead the Eagles in the first half with Cris Tiu playing only 8 minutes due to two personal fouls in the first quarter. Jai Reyes also played well ending the first half with a three-point shot stretching the lead to six. The Eagles never looked back since then.

La Salle missed wide-open looks, actually went 3-18 from the rainbow country. They could not control Rabeh's scoring inside-out. Jayvee Casio had decent numbers but didn't really had much fireworks.

Everything could come to an end this Thursday, Sept. 25. I expect DLSU to bounce back come game 2 but I wouldn't be surprised if Ateneo will get the crown by then.

The UAAP seniors men's basketball will surely close-out with a bang as the stage is set for the Finals showdown between Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University. The best of three finals will start this Sunday, 21st of September.

DLSU eliminated the Tamaraws while last year's runner-up UE Red Warriors was smashed by ADMU. The Archers are very much eager to get back on the Blue Eagles as they have yet to beat the Eagles in two meetings this season.

Alaska Aces

The Aces boosted its frontline by acquiring Ervin Sotto who was released by Air21 Express. Sotto a 6'5" center is expected to aid Sonny Thoss in the slot. Another bigman snatched by the Aces is last year's overall top pick, Joe Calvin Devance. Devance landed to the Aces in exchange for Alaska's 5th overall pick in this year's draft, Solomon Mercado. Eddie Laure and Welcoat's 2nd round pick next year seals the deal.

Air21 Express

The biggest buzz in the Air21 camp is regarding the comeback of Big J, Sonny Jaworski. The management expressed their will on tapping the legendary "Jawo" to coach the team. Coach Bo Perasol meanwhile, is on leave even if the team has started its regular trainings for the up coming season. This is to allow negotiations to push through. The Express released Ervin Sotto and traded Gaby Espinas to the Red Bull Barakos. Their drafted rookies took the slots of the two.

New players: Mark Borboran (R), Cholo Villanueva (R)

Barangay Ginebra Kings

The Fiesta Cup champions is one of the two teams with no draft picks this year (together with Coca Cola). The Gin Kings is keeping its cluster tight. The team claims that it has been trying to reach Rudy Hatfield who filed a leave of absence several years ago.

New players: None

Magnolia Beverage Masters

The team surprised everyone during the 2008 Annual Draft at Market Market Taguig. The team traded its 3rd overall draft pick to Talk and Text for forward Jay Washington. The management decided in the bold move because Danny Ildefonso is on the injured list. He is expected to miss half or the entire All Filipino Cup. Rumors speak that the team is cooking several trades to release some of their wingmen. But before that, the team makes a bang by acquiring center Mick Pennisi from the Barakos in exchange for future draft picks. How about that?! (referring to Red Bull trading the last piece the team's core). Pennisi will fill in the slot of Samigue Eman who is reported to be in the injured list. If there's one team in the world who never wants a weak spot in all positions, it's gotta be Magnolia!

Purefoods TJ Giants

The Giants is expected to regain their All Filipino Cup supremacy behind the guns of former MVP James Yap, 6th man awardee Peter June Simon and team captain Kerby Raymundo. To boost its chances, the Giants has five new faces on its roster- rookies Beau Belga, Jonathan Fernandez and rookie free agent Chad Alonzo. They also got former Alaska wingman Aaron Aban, and Red Bull's point guard Topex Robinson.

Joe Devance to Alaska Aces

PBA teams are all business in boosting their line-ups for the new season of the PBA. After a blockbuster finals in the Fiesta Cup, teams are now more motivated to improve their respective squads knowing that the fans are back in the PBA.

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters is the first to make noise after Draft Day. Sophamore and 2007-2008 no. 1 draft pick Joe Calvin Devance was dealt to Alaska for rookie guard Solomon Mercado and veteran Eddie Laure. The Aces also grabs the 2009 2nd round draft rights of the Elasto Painters. The 5th overall pick in this year's draft, Solomon Mercado strengthens the backcourt of Rain or Shine. However, with the exit of Devance, the team has a very slim frontline. Eddie Laure tries to play big throughout his career but he's a thin 6'3" forward.

Obviously Rain or Shine wanted backcourt stability with this trade and the acquisition of spitfire guard TY Tang and of course 1st overall pick, Gabe Norwood. I expect the team to get 2-3 players in the free agency market. They certainly need an added body to help Jay-R Reyes in the middle.

My shot: I was surprised upon knowing this trade or make that upon knowing that Rain or Shine got Mercado and veteran Laure. I expected Devance to be in the block this off-season simply because he failed to gel with the Welcoat squad. Yes, he provides points but it was very obvious that he was not in the thick of things with the team. He seemed like a stranger to the team, so to speak. Lastly, he is the only bait Rain or Shine has. However, I thought the team could have fished for bigger names than Mercado and Laure. Well, this trade can only be spelled when the season begins. If Mercado is as good as advertised and Laure is able to play quality minutes, then this is Rain or Shine's first clever trade.

Here's the dumb trade: This trade brings back my dismay to the Belasco-Isip trade. Welcoat shipped reliable veteran Nic Belasco despite his exceptional performance (led Welcoat and the league in rebounding) for young, soft forward Marc Isip. All for the reason of wanting to surround Jay-R Reyes with young blood. And now, they're happy with Eddie Laure-

On the flip-side, nothing much to say for Alaska. It's all gain for them. With Tenorio and rookie dela Pena, they didn't really need Mercado. Tim Cone however admits that it was an agonizing decision because he believes in Mercado saying he'll be a great player down the line. Laure on the other hand is a bench mob. With the entry of Joe Devance, they have a reliable offensive weapon in the forward positions (3-4). Plus, Joe can run. I'm sure he's a fit in Tim Cone's triangle offense because he has the shooting hands. 6'9" Eric Canlas is also reported to suit up for Alaska this season. The Aces are all business in boosting it's frontline.

Tenorio-Miller-Dela Cruz-Devance-Thoss looks good to me. *wink!

Iranian center Hamed Haddadi enters NBA

After a stellar performance in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Hamed Haddadi will finally make it to the NBA. The Memphis Grizzlies signed the 7-2 Iranian center. Haddadi is the only player to average double-double (points and rebounds) during the summer games. He also played well during the stint of the Iranian national team in the US just before the olympics.

“We are pleased to sign Hamed,” said Chris Wallace, the Grizzles GM. “He is a young center who was very productive as a rebounder, shotblocker and scorer at the Rocky Mountain Revue Summer League in Salt Lake City, Utah, the 2008 Olympics and the FIBA Diamond Ball Tournament in Nanjing, China prior to the Olympics. Our coaching staff is eager to begin working with Hamed.”

My shot: I have seen Haddadi play and I think he deserves to play in the NBA. He is not as athletic as Yao Ming but he has a soft touch. Aside from being exceptional at the basicsWhat's good about him is he is a team player. His down side would be his speed and agility. At 7-2, 254-pound and 23 years of age, this kid is full of potential. I hope the Grizzlies will provide a good training and development core for Haddadi. Looks like he'll get the ample playing time with Memphis. The team does not have dominating center (only Marc Gasol, Darko Milicic) and so this Iranian will surely have a chance to shine.

Team USA: Redemption Complete

Perhaps one of the hardest fought gold medal fight in the history of men's basketball in the Olympics, USA takes the gold medal and supremacy with a 118-107. Spain didn't hand over the game without a fight, a good fight at that. The game was close all the way although the Americans stayed ahead most of the game.

Lebron James and crowd favorite Kobe Bryant had quick two fouls in the first quarter making way for the early entry of Deron Williams and revitalized Dwyane Wade. Wade errupted for 21 points in the first half. Kobe Bryant proved once again that he plays even bigger when the game is on the line. He poured 13 his 20 points and had two crucial assists in the fourth.

Congrats to team USA. Spain and defending champion Argentina settled for silver and bronze medal respectively.

Pistons legend and Hall of Fame coach Chuck Daly coached the Dream Team to Gold in Barcelona

SECAUCUS, N.J.--The man who never called a timeout in the ’92 Barcelona Olympics coaching the Dream Team to a convincing gold medal performance is watching these Beijing Games intently, most notably, the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team. John Hareas of NBA.com spoke with Hall of Famer Chuck Daly, who weighed in on the U.S.’s strengths, weaknesses, the just completed Greece-U.S. matchup, Saturday’s game vs. Spain and why it is advantageous for Coach K to call as many timeout as possible during the team’s march to gold.

NBA.com: First off, what were you impressions of the game against Greece this morning? Obviously, a different outcome from two years ago…

Chuck Daly: Well I think, as stated by some of the players, this game has been on their calendar. They knew that this is the team that had defeated USA in the previous World Championships, and I think they were ready for the challenge, to say the least.

NBA.com: What were some of the things that kind of jumped out to you watching the game this morning?

Chuck Daly: Well, the No. 1 thing is their defense, they are ferocious defensively. They do a lot more trapping. And secondly, you’re going to have a hard time getting shots off inside. I know that a lot of people were concerned about the lack of size. But there’s size there, you can bring in [Chris] Bosh and guys like LeBron James playing 6’7” height-wise, but they probably play closer to 6’10” or 6’11”. Getting a shot off inside is extremely difficult, so consequently they get a lot of blocked shots and run-outs, they get a lot of steals – run-outs. And a team to really challenge is going to have to have tremendous ball-handlers and great patience.

NBA.com: When you look at this team what strikes you as the real strength of this team?

Chuck Daly: Their overall athleticism and their attitude.

NBA.com: Where are they vulnerable in the international game?

Chuck Daly: I don’t think they are. I know that everybody keeps preaching it, I hear it on TV that, “Well wait ’til, wait ’til we reach so-and-so, wait ’til we reach so-and-so.”

I don’t think this team is vulnerable because they’ve been set up differently by Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski. They carefully chose the right people who they knew would be competitive. They also chose people who are very, very athletic and talented, and great basketball players. They’re very deep. Today they played only eight people, basically, the first half when they made their run, which is unusual. Normally, most coaches have to try to get everybody in – they don’t have to do it. I’m not saying this will be a cakewalk, but quite frankly, I think we’re just too strong.

NBA.com: Three-point shooting doesn’t concern you, especially with the shorter three-point line?

Chuck Daly: That comes and goes with anybody.

NBA.com: Who has stood out in your mind? Dwyane Wade is speaking volumes with his play off the bench …

Chuck Daly: Well, he’s not a bench player, I mean, he’s one of our premier players, certainly. He’s coming off injuries, but you know, I mean he pretty much carried Miami to a championship several years ago, scoring well into the 30s and 40s. He’s a brilliant player, and we have a lot of them: Carmelo (Anthony), LeBron, Chris Paul, everybody kind of steps up a little bit differently depending on what the game is. And what’s happened is, because Mike [Krzyzewski] has been together with these people for so long, he now understands their games. When you put together in a short period of time, you don’t understand much about what their game is, so he can plug them in accordingly.

NBA.com: From someone whose been on the hot seat coaching NBA players in the Olympics, what is Coack K going through in terms of his goal of delivering on the enormous expectations?

Chuck Daly: Well I think down deep he’s very confident. But there’s always the apprehension. And you can see it, there’s a small spot on his left cheek that gets very red during the game, and that indicates to me he’s feeling some kind of anticipation, apprehension, whatever you want to call it. Because, you know, you’re not supposed to lose in this position. And I told our players in ’92, “There’s two islands off the coast there of Barcelona,” I said, “One is a swinging place, the other has a lot of caves, high wind, high suicide rate. If we don’t win this thing, we won’t be able to go Majorca, we’ll go to Minorca, and we won’t be able to return to the United States, I can tell you that.”

NBA.com: When people stop you on the street and want to talk about the Dream Team, what’s the one thing people like to ask you about?

Chuck Daly: The mystique of it. To bring all of those superstars in our profession together would be like taking about five rock groups, the Beatles, et cetera, and traveling with them, in the basketball world, and the sports world. Six thousand journalists were there, it was, you know, it was an unusual situation and that’s what they talk about. And the way the players handled themselves. They handled themselves so well during those Olympics. They went to other venues; they mingled with the other athletes. We didn’t necessarily stay at the village, but it really was impossible with the size of the people we had – and security.

NBA.com: You never called a timeout in the ’92 Games. Is that even possible in the international game right now for the U.S.?

Chuck Daly: No, I wouldn’t think that that would be the case. In my own mind, we played at 10:30 every night, every other night, and I wanted to make sure we got back to get something to eat before they closed down the kitchen. I don’t know, they probably kept it open (laughs), but, I just kind of made an off-hand thought to myself, “Why are we calling timeouts?”

And I didn’t. I was only tempted one time against Croatia, and didn’t do it, and got through it without one, but I don’t think that should be, or is the case today. I know one thing, I lost a lot of exposure and a lot of money, and I’m still pretty upset about that.

NBA.com: How so?

Chuck Daly: Well you get that television exposure; you get a lot more ads. Krzyzewski, with these timeouts, is going to get a lot of new ads. Some pennies in his pocket.

NBA.com: What is the biggest difference from ’92 to 2008 in terms of the over all international game?

Chuck Daly: Well there’s several things. One, shortly after the ’92 Games, I did a book, a diary, and I kind of predicted what was going to happen. When the Dream Team was shown to 180 countries I knew it would enhance basketball everywhere, and it has. I mean 300 million people playing basketball in China? Come on! Who would ever believe that? So the sport has this glamour that goes around the world. The difference is that, the teams at that time, in ’92, we might have had one or two foreign players in the league. Now we have anywhere from 75 to 90 on a given year. And it’s lost its mystique for them, it’s mystery. They play in our league; they know these guys, so they don’t have any fear, so to speak, of our teams.

Secondly, all of our coaches, from, you know the Massimino’s, the Dalys and the Van Gundys and the Fratellos and all these people traveled around the world giving clinics and you know explaining it, and teaching basketball. And the Europeans have their own take on it. Theirs is a drive-and-kick game, which is now a big part of our game in this country. And so, there are no mysteries, and it’s just a case of them developing their skills and their fundamentals.

NBA.com: Look ahead to Saturday’s U.S. game against Spain, which features seven NBA players, the most outside of the U.S. team. …

Chuck Daly: Well this should be THE game, unless they meet again later on, which they very well might. I think our guys will be very focused, and I think Spain will have to depend on their ball handling, and their ball handling has to be very precise in order to overcome the pressure. I think that everyone is looking to it, and see if they’re the team with the most experience, the most talent, and see what our forces can do against them.

NBA.com: Is there a difference in elation in winning an NBA title and an Olympic gold medal?

Chuck Daly: Yeah, there’s a different elation. In a lot of instances we’re expected to do that sort of thing with the type of personnel we’re presented with in the Olympics. The other’s a long, hard process. Sometimes, it takes years to develop and when you take a group and go four, five, six years and finally win a title, that’s pretty special.

Dwyane Wade is Back

Shaquille O'neal coined him as "The Flash" but such name failed to marked on the minds of Wade's fans, and perhaps even to Dwyane. Smothered with injuries resulting to a miserable NBA season, Wade is back big time.

Among the players in the current TEAM USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Dwyane Wade has been the most impressive. I think everyone is just glad to see the 6-4 spitfire guard playing to his potential. His quickness is quicker, elevation is higher, shooting is sweeter, defense is tighter, just a better Dwyane Wade coming off the bench for the so called Redeem Team. Despite playing off the bench, he is the team's leading scorer after two games. With thunderous-acrobatic jams, lightning quick drives, active defense, and all net jump-shots, D. Wade is playing in full gear.

Dwyane Wade is one of my personal favorites in the NBA today. What he showed in Miami's championship series against Dallas was simply remarkable. Now, with a healthier and much improved Wade, Miami can definitely flip their fortunes from last season. Wade will certainly carry the team on his stronger shoulders. I just hope no more injuries for this very tremendous player.

All eyes on USA's REDEEM TEAM

Despite a flawless standing during their tune-up games in China, the "Redeem Team" is still unable to win the trust and confidence of critics with regards to the team's capability to snatch the Olympic gold and world supremacy in basketball.

Looking at their games, team USA has an extremely talented lineup especially in the backcourt. This is a deadly team when it can runs at will. It was very evident in their game against Australia and Russia that slowing them down is a vital key to beat this power house.

Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and the comebacking Dwayne Wade will surely lead this team. Their first official game will be against host China on August 10.

Ginebra Takes Game 1

After a rough start, the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings took game 1 of the Smart PBA Fiesta Conference, 105-96. The Finals debut of Air21 had a stellar straight, able to erect a 10-0 lead to start off the game. But right after coach Jong called for a full time-out, the Kings went on a roll erasing the 10 point defecit and even snatching the lead. The Gin Kings never looked back since.

Ginebra played extremely tight defense translating to Air 21's sour shooting from the field. Gary David was tightly guarded. As coach Bo said, his team's defense is fueled by their offense. In game 1, when they loss their shooting touch their defense also struggled. Cris Alexander outplayed his counterpart, Steve Thomas. The Express settled for stugnant 1 on 1 plays mostly on Thomas posting Alexander.

Mavs: Early Exit?

The Dallas Mavericks now faces another impending early exit in the NBA 2008 Playoffs. (applause! hahahaha) Last year, despite being the number one team in the West, Dallas was eliminated by the number 8 team, Golden State Warriors. This is perhaps the nightmare that haunts the entire team especially the management which is why the team made some major roster movement this year.

Mark Cuban, team owner of the Dallas Mavericks insisted on acquiring future hall of famer point guard, Jason Kidd. He believes that the 35 year old veteran point guard will spell the difference for his team this season. However, acquiring Kidd required letting go of spitfire guard Devin Harris, big man D. Diop, and other bench players.

Today, the Mavs lost once again to the youthful New Orleans Hornets to the tune of 127-103. CP3 lead the Hornets to a dominating victory over the Mavericks. Hornets now take a 2-0 advantage in their best-of-seven showdown. Chris Paul showed superb leadership on and off the court scoring 32 points plus 17 assists (now that's leadership for yah!). Stojakovic and all-star David West also provided support finishing with 22 and 27 points each.

Last season, according to critics, Dirk Nowitzki was the missing link. The sweet shooting 7-footer of Dallas didn't play well against the small but scrappy front-line of the Warriors. But this season, based on the couple of games that I've seen between these two teams, Nowitzki is very comfortable playing against Chandler or David West of New Orleans. So who is or who are the missing links, at least for the first two games of the series?

This is Game 2 box score for the Mavs. Looking at it, Howard, Stackhouse, and J. Kidd is way below expectations in terms of scoring. Josh Howard should always be scoring more than 20. I believe Kidd and Stackhouse should give at least 15 points per for them to deserve where they are right now and the playing time given to them.

Note that in Game 1, Howard, Stackhouse, and Kidd scored 17, 9, and 11 respectively. Howard's 17 points was a 4-16 clip from the field (poor 25% FG).

I have seen the Mavs play its A-game against the Hornets. It was a game were every jumpshot of Terry, Howard, and Kidd dropped. Stackhouse drove to the basket anytime he wanted to and Kidd dominated the young Chris Paul. They say playoffs is a different level of basketball. Here, the boys are seperated from the men. Looks like the Hornets have taken their game way higher than the Mavs.

Now, did Cuban had the answer in Jason Kidd?

Day 2: 2008 NBA Playoffs

It's the 2nd day of the highly anticipated NBA 2008 playoffs and guess what, the Philadelphia 76ers pulled-off a surprising victory over playoffs main-stay, Detroit Pistons.

It was a stunning 90-86 victory for the sixers. They did it with defense, limiting the Pistons to only 16 points in the final quarter. This was their lowest output in the 4 quarters. Andre Miller had 20 points and 6 assists, and 4 other Sixers scored at least 10 points. Rasheed Wallace headed the home team with 24 points and 9 boards.

Now, I believe that the 76ers can in fact steal the series from Detroit. It's defense that will propel them over the Pistons. Billups, Prince, and Hamilton can definitely shoot the lights out on any given night and so the Sixers' defense must always be tight on the shooters of Detroit. Winning one over the home team is a fantastic start but it never spells the outcome of the series.

Meanwhile, in the Western Conference, the number one team, LA Lakers proved the worth of its major player movement during the regular season. Gasol, a 27-year-old forward/center acquired from Memphis last February 1 had a scorching game scoring 36 points on 14/20 shooting and 16 rebounds. Add to that is Bryant's 30 points. Damn! this Lakers squad is for real! I believe they'll definitely make it to the Finals this season. I can't wait for Andrew Bynum to get back on the playing court. The Celtics has their triple threat in Garnett-Pierce-Allen but the Lakers can have a quadruple threat in Gasol-Bynum-Odom-Bryant. How about that?! I'm really not a Bryant fanatic but I must admit, number 24 has definitely proven his stands as a player, a team player at that.

How I wish I could watch every single game of the playoffs! gggrrr!

Korver, now in Utah

During the last week of December, 2007, Kyle Korver became a member of the Utah Jazz in exchange for Gordan Giricek and a conditional first round draft pick in next year's draft. Based on my readings, the Jazz was the one who initiated the trade. I wonder why the Sixers grabbed the offer considering that Korver has been their only consistent threat from the outside ever since he came to the Sixers. Korver was around 40% from the 3-point arc last season and through time, he has improved as an all around player including on the defensive end.

I think the trade definitely favors the Jazz. With Korver, the Jazz now have a formidable three-point shooter. Boozer can exploit more on the inside because the defense will have to extend out on Korver. Kick-out plays to Korver will always be present every for sure. Korver will join Okur and Williams in playing beyond the arc. The Sixers on the other hand, might see the fruit of this trade by the time they make a good move on their draft rights gained from Utah. For now, Philidelphia is a "so so" team. I feel Andre Iguodola isn't that ripe yet to carry a team on his young shoulders. Andre Miller also isn't really the type of player who can lead a team to strings of victory. The team needs a lot of reconstruction especially on their roster. If the Sixers wants to get back to their glorious days, they must do something with their line-up.

13 Rules of Basketball James Naismith

The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist.
A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, allowance to be made for a man running at good speed.
The ball must be held by the hands. The arms or body must not be used for holding it.
No shouldering, holding, pushing, striking or tripping in any way of an opponent. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul; the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made or, if there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game. No substitution shall be allowed.
A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violations of Rules 3 and 4 and such as described in Rule 5.
If either side makes three consecutive fouls it shall count as a goal for the opponents (consecutive means without the opponents in the meantime making a foul).
A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and stays there, providing those defending the goal do no touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests on the edges, and the opponent moves the basket, it shall count as a goal.
When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field and played by the first person touching it. In case of dispute the umpire shall throw it straight into the field. The thrower-in is allowed five seconds. If he holds it longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall call a foul on them.
The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the referee when three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have power to disqualify men according to Rule 5.
The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds, to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time. He shall decide when a goal has been made and keep account of the goals, with any other duties that are usually performed by a referee.
The time shall be two fifteen-minute halves, with five minutes rest between.
The side making the most goals in that time shall be declared the winner.

James Naismith was the Canadian physical education instructor who invented basketball in 1891. James Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario and educated at McGill University and Presbyterian Cllege in Montreal. He was the physical education teacher at McGill University (1887 to 1890) and at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts (1890 to 1895). At Springfield College (which was then the Y.M.C.A. training school), James Naismith, under the direction of American phys-ed specialist Luther Halsey Gulick, invented the indoor sport of basketball.

The first formal rules were devised in 1892. Initially, players dribbled a soccer ball up and down a court of unspecified dimensions. Points were earned by landing the ball in a peach basket. Iron hoops and a hammock-style basket were introduced in 1893. Another decade passed, however, before the innovation of open-ended nets put an end to the practice of manually retrieving the ball from the basket each time a goal was scored.

In 1959, James Naismith was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame (called the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.)
